What's the current era equivalent of old Jackie Chan movies?
old jackie chan movies are 90% fight choreography so honestly jason statham
Mr Beast videos
>>217241332there isn't one, or even anything close to rivaling Shaw Bros, that's why life suckswe got a small smidgen of hope when Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais appeared but that was fleeting
>>217241332>>217241510Takes way too much effort, time, and skill to film those scenes like they did no modern actor will do it. Also a lot of the stunts were really dangerous. 80's and 90's hong Kong kino will never be matched sadly.
They're still making period kung fu movies, but I haven't seen any of the recent ones. I tried watching The Grandmaster of Kung Fu (2023) but it was subpar and I turned it off. There's probably good stuff out there. If you mean Jackie's 80s style with stunts and comedy and props mixed in with the fights, I don't know if anyone has really done it like him. Enter the Fat Dragon (2020) was kinda like Donnie Yen doing Jackie's style. It was pretty good.
Twilight of the Warriors: Walled City
Netflix's City Hunter is really goofy but has surprisingly good fights
None. That, and Hong Kong action in general is gone and will never come back because muh safety concerns and the general lack of talent in film today.
The Chinese do shit like that even just in certain cable wuxia dramas. It depends on the production crew. You have to know and trust the people you work with to do this. Jackie Chan was, and definitely is the high water mark on this work, but as time goes on other people are starting to filter through. They don't have the kinds of pampered poodle laws the way the west does. The closest thing from the United States of Israel would be Tom Cruise. Let that sink in for a moment.
>>217243993Relatively poor southeast asians are still willing to hurt themselves on camera. I don't think we've seen the end of Thai action. India could have potential but they're a cucked country with no martial arts history to speak of so all they can do is embarrassing imitations.
>>217244406India is artistically bankrupt, but Thailand is promising.
>>217241332Tony Jaa kinos were the last time I enjoyed martial arts movies
Cultural impact? Ip man probably.Practical stunts? John Wick? IdkI'm sure there are better C-movie equivalents but I'm not to familiar with their releases
The Raid films were maybe the closest we got to replicating something like older Jackie Chan films, but evidently they still haven't even gone about making *The Raid 3* or some kind of spiritual successor, so we're just kind of stuck waiting for somebody else to emerge in the martial arts space. It's unfortunate because I love martial arts movies, particularly when they're done with real, practical, physical stunts that are extremely dangerous but all too fun to watch.
Who was ever like Jackie? Nobody. There are still martial arts movies being made though
>>217244707>Who was ever like Jackie?I categorize Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger together in my mind.
>>217244707there was plenty of hong kong renowned for their stunts. jackie is the most well known because he was one of the first to break into hollywood, and his name just rolls off the tongue.
Jackie is a one of a kind talentThe only guys comparable to Jackie Chan are named Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton -- he is that legit. You have to go back 100 years to find peers for him.
>>217241332Those John Wick type gun-fu movies probably. East Asian Martial Arts have all been demystified by MMA and internet videos of bullshit-fu master getting beaten up by random low tier boxers.
>>217245588>East Asian Martial Arts have all been demystified by MMA and internet videos of bullshit-fu master getting beaten up by random low tier boxers.it isn't about realism, it's about cool stunts and fight choreography
>>217245588No one thought 70s and 80s old school kung fu films were realistic, and long before MMA there were plenty of jokes about guys saying "don't mess with me, I know kung fu!" and making Bruce Lee noises and doing a Karate Kid pose, but getting knocked out by a boxer or brawler.Stuff like the Jason Bourne movies did more to turn people off of old-style martial arts. People want to see brutal, gritty, commando-style takedowns, not a guy who focuses his energy and kicks in slow motion.
