As the first anon mentioned, these rapes were considered incredibly violent in nature. And when you couple that with pretty horrific testimony, possibly even pictures or eyewitness accounts of aggression or anything like that, it's very easy to paint a picture of someone who was not only not remorseful, but someone who was actively trying to harm people. Makes it very difficult in those situations to bring down the sentence or to gain any sort of leniency.
