I know people have speculated on the “making of” doc being the actual 9th episode, but have they really thought through what that would mean? Maybe the reason why the finale feels so off is because the bridge that Vecna creates is not between Hawkins and dimension X, but between the on-screen world of the show and the real world. Maybe the doc starts out normal while covering the first few episodes, but by the end of E7 he has fully escaped and exerts his influence on the production of the finale, hence all the continuity errors, unresolved plot threads, bad writing, etc.. Vecna essentially traps them in a forced and self-indulgent happy ending so he can escape to the real world

Across the entire story, Steve ended up growing the most as a person. He started out as King Harrington of his school, and the one relationship he took serious and got over his Ego for ended up dragging him into things far beyond his imagination.
If this didn't happen in S1, he'd end up as the "peaked in high school" kinda guy. Like Johnny from Karate Kid in Cobra Kai S1.
Instead of that fate, Steve discovered things in himself he never knew were there. I think that's the most satisfying character arc in the entire show.

Given how he was self conscious about being a coward, it probably was less about him being dumb, and more about him being afraid to face the "real world," so he was just comfortable and safe being the local school drug dealer, and making friends by being the cool older nerdy "kid" at the high school, and acting like he was actually wanting to graduate was just to cover up the fact that he just wanted to sit around and play D&D with teenagers and fuck around in a garage band for the rest of his life.

I enjoyed the big video game boss at the end with the weak points and it feeling like a big WoW raid. I liked the abyss and wormhole plot line. I liked the end with them growing up and shelving their childhoods.

I enjoyed the final episode and finale.

He seems dumb in the context of our reality, but in the context of the Stranger Things reality, his belief that Eddie had supernatural powers was no less believable than what was actually happening, in fact he was absolutely right, he just pinned it on the wrong being. Just as weird was how the whole bullied Dustin plotline was basically abandoned without any real resolution. There never should have been a Vecna because the show was supposed to be about the Montauk Project (where Joyce and Hop move to at the end, which is not a coincidence). But that should would not have gotten a tenth of the audience ST got without all the nostalgia bait of the first seasons.
The story of Montauk had everything that made this show good and then some: government child abuse leading to super powers, larger than life otherworldly threats, interdimensional travel, and gays (although the gays were gays because they were raped as boys by paperclip Nazis).

You could cut the coming out scene, plus the couple equally forced and cringeworthy foreshadowing scenes with Robin (and one after scene with Mike), a total of maybe 10 minutes runtime, and all there would be zero indication he was gay. It was 100% shoehorned, and I do could believe even Duffers didn't want it but were told "or else" by Netflix.

It was leading up to be a perfect Stobin ending, and they had to fuck it up, which obviously leaves Steve by himself and thus the writers force him to start pining for Nancy again.
That was the cherry on the top of season 3's awfulness. The one good thing about that season was Steve and Robin and then they ruined the payoff.
