There's no actual person in high society who would spent time slumming around screaming that they drive a $80,000 car. There's only the fakers and poseurs who lose their shit because they're trying to ape to that level and still get no respect.

In the real world the upper echelons of aristocracy and elitism don't give half a shit about any random goober with an expensive watch, this is always the menchen way of trying to play catchup with their new money. A black gardener in his overalls trying to walk in the front door of a white country club is about the same stratum of social distance as this guy trying to think he'd actually be welcome in society because of his trinket.
>>
>>217244481
Actually, I feel like you're probably wrong about that. I have a large family, and therefore I had to buy a big vehicle to accommodate them. I bought a vehicle new, on the current car market that is absolutely gouging anybody who goes into a dealership. Thankfully, my wife won the lottery recently and I was able to pay for the car in full with cash. But I understand you probably didn't expect me to say any of this because of how outrageously unique my car situation is.

This watch I got here was first purchased by your great-granddaddy. It was bought during the First World War in a little general store inKnoxville, Tennessee. It was bought by private Doughboy Ernie Coolidge the day he set sail for Paris. It was your great-granddaddy's war watch, made by the first company to ever make wrist watches. You see, up until then, people just carried pocket watches. Your great-granddaddy wore that watch every day he was in the war. Then when he had done his duty, he went home to your great- grandmother, took the watch off his wrist and put it in an ol' coffee can. And in that can it stayed 'til your grandfather Dane Coolidge was called upon by his country to go overseas and fight the Germans once again. This time they called it World War Two. Your great-granddaddy gave it to your granddad for good luck. Unfortunately, Dane's luck wasn't as good as his old man's. Your granddad was a Marine and he was killed with all the other Marines at the battle of Wake Island. Your granddad was facing death and he knew it. None of those boys had any illusions about ever leavin' that island alive. So three days before the Japanese took the island, your 22-year old grandfather asked a gunner on anAir Force transport named Winocki, a man he had never met before in his life, to deliver to his infant son, who he had never seen in the flesh, his gold watch. Three days later, your grandfather was dead. But Winocki kept his word. After the war was over, he paid a visit to your grandmother, delivering to your infant father, his Dad's gold watch. This watch. This watch was on your Daddy's wrist when he was shot down over Hanoi. He was captured and put in a Vietnamese prison camp. Now he knew if the gooks ever saw the watch it'd be confiscated. The way your Daddy looked at it, that watch was your birthright. And he'd be damned if any slopeheads were gonna put their greasy yella hands on his boy's birthright. So he hid it in the one place he knew he could...

Are watches cool? Because there's objectively no reason to wear one anymore. Clocks are everywhere and "everyone" carries a smartphone. Even non smartphones have the time
I don't know. Just seems like a pointless thing to wear but at the same time what other accessory can you really wear as a man. Baseball caps look stupid
>>
>>217244481
That's cool. My watch was only $10 at kmart and it tells time, too. Does yours do anything besides tell time? No? Then why did you pay so much for it? Because money is the only thing in your life that makes you feel manly? Oh, I'm sorry to hear that your life is so devoid of simple pleasures that a fancy watch makes you feel superior.
>>

>why would I use a wristwatch when I have a pocket watch?

>>217252382
We dropped pocket watches because it was annoying and tedious to pull it out of your pocket to check the time, and your hands might be busy holding stuff or dirty/sweaty while working/cleaning/whatever and moved to wristwatches as they solved all of these problems.
A phone is just a pocketwatch with a terrible battery life. My Casio's battery lasts 10 years my phone's can't last 2 days.

Aesthetic objects that please the owner have value, but if the only purpose is to demonstrate that value or status to others then it becomes a sign of insecurity. Exact attitudes towards the acceptable level of property ownership and consumption differ over time but it's always a gradient, never a zero.

If you don't need it you don't need it, but it's not wrong to surround yourself with beautiful things. Though that comes with two caveats: 1 that it's within your means, and 2 that you have some semblance of good taste (which requires experience). At first brush this might sound at odds with the first paragraph, after all "taste" is in some sense communally determined. The difference is that taste is more a process of winnowing chaff to find an ideal that closely harmonizes with the shared aesthetics of the culture, for mutual benefit. The pathological approach (as demonstrated by characters such as in the OP) is fixating solely on the social value that can be derived from an object with no personal sense towards the aesthetics ("this pleasant thing enriches the experience of myself and those around me" vs "everyone will hold me in esteem if I show I have this thing").

Unless you are a diver or have some kind of job you do with your hands that also requires you to be checking the time, there really is no practical reason to wear a watch(for the reasons you pointed out).

That being said, watches are the only acceptable form of jewelry for a man that can show some status, it can signal to women that you have your shit together career wise. For that purpose I would recommend getting a Rolex, don't be a retard and buy something "better" than a Rolex like AP, Patek etc. since only men and gold diggers know or care about those brands.

The worst thing you can do is wear a Casio watch, as you explained nobody needs a watch to tell time anymore so wearing something cheap like that signals to everyone that you either broke, or a manchild who doesn't understand the purpose of wearing a watch. If you are so broke that you can't even a afford a high end $1000 Rolex clone that is outwardly indistinguishable from an original and you absolutely must wear a watch, then get a smartwatch, at least that way you have the plausible deniability that you wear it for workouts or notifications or something. Here is the tier list:

1. Rolex
2. Expensive Rolex clone(must be outwardly indistinguishable)
3. No watch
4. Smartwatch(ideally latest Apple flagship)

No one cares about watches anymore. If that was a smartwatch maybe people would be impressed.
>>
>>217253256
Shit isn't even impressed anymore. It seems like all it is a gimmick, smart watches and smart glasses but who really cares anymore?
>>
>>217253311
I think people that own smart watches don't really care about watches. They're the type of people that wore a Casio and Timex back in the 80's or whatever.
>>
>>217244481
That's kind of stupid, I also have a watch but it didn't cost more than my car. He doesn't sound like a very good businessman.

>>
>>217253136
It’s okay to wear Casio if you are 20-30 and look good. Get a metal hipster one. Women know Cartier which is cheaper than Rolex, but you have to be masculine to compensate for its gay energy. Also you can get a vintage Rolex for less than 3k. In the end it’s just a watch, no need to overthink or perform mental gymnastics like watch autists on YouTube like to do

had one that was $30 in kmart and it lasted 9 years on the same battery then expired.
bought a replacement with the same model name, but quality wasn't the same - it didn't last as long and more or less fell apart - was still good but nothing will beat the 2001 timex ironman

If you're actively working why would you need a watch? Are you going to see it and say "well, time to stop this thing I'm working on"? You'd finish and then check the time or the only timekeeping that matters is the time the shop says it is

I have a TAG heuer, but the internals are messed up and it needs a full repair most likely. service would probably cost £500 from an official dealer, which is probably what the watch would be worth to sell if repaired - I'd like to have it sorted out, but it's offputting

My wife gave me mine on the day of our wedding, always reminds me of that day

Oooh boy the way she looked that day, long blonde hair, slim figure, that smile of pure happiness that she could be with me... the next few days we fucked like rabbits in our house at the lake, only stopped fucking to swim or to bbq

Nine months later, our first son was born.

Man I love looking at my watch
