Idiot plot isn’t automatically a bad thing, characters shouldn’t act like robots. They should have flaws which would lead them to making "dumb decisions". If everyone acted 100% rational, most stories wouldn’t exist in general. It’s like when autists think a character making poor judgment in a high intense scenario is bad writing. Humans in real life make mistakes, why should fictional characters be any different

Idiot plot =/= bad writing. Most people are complaining about characters not acting like they would in a certain situation. Like someone said the sopranos fits. Silvio killing big Dom was a fucking retarded decision he made but it was in character what he did considering everything we’ve seen up to then and you can understand why he did it from his perspective
>>
>>217246849
>come on now
yes, that is the face you should be making any time you watch any work of fiction. They even tell you this if you read the credits.
>these stories are works of fiction for entertainment purposes only and are not meant to be taken seriously in any way. Any similarity to any event or person, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
You DO stay and read the credits, don't you anon????
>>
>>217246831
A better way to put it is, if the characters behave like real people, the plot doesn't work.

Prometheus is a good example - elite scientists consistently break safety protocols and that creates chaos/the plot.
>>
>>217247032
>Prometheus is a good example - elite scientists consistently break safety protocols and that creates chaos/the plot.
Alien is a good example. Highly trained spaceship crew breaks quarantine protocol.
Almost every sci fi / horror story has a "broke the protocol" moment. It is a common element of story telling, when transitioning from Act 1 to Act 2, where there is a breakdown of the status quo.
>>
>>217246782
I wouldn't really call it idiot plot but a lot of the major conflicts stem from tiny slights and insults that build up, spiral into a complete mess over time and destroy the relationships between the characters. But Sopranos does it really good in my opinion. It's a spiral of things breaking down and becoming worse and worse overall.
>>
>>217246876
Generally people know they're watching fiction but they wouldn't get invested if they didn't take it seriously.
>>
>>217247117
But there is more to the plot in Alien. They don't all agree/aren't all scienctists and Ash has a hidden motive to break it. Ash is the one that breaks safety protocol.
>>
>>217247117
Prometheus is the better example because they're actually scientists, the Alien crew were little more than passengers. Trained but probably not to a rigorous extent since it wasn't their job, nor could they have expected a black swan like the xenomorph even if they were.
>>
>>217246673
Game of thrones which is funny because in the earlier seasons everyone was going on about how smart and realistically written it was

The Alien crew were not trained in the same way but Ripley refused to let them on the ship when they returned with Cain and the xenomorph. She was in charge and Ash opened the doors anyway.

That partially describes the completely nonsensical and self-contradictory plot of Picard S1 (which was all I could stomach), but it doesn't go far enough. It was a "This happens, and then this happens, and then this happens" plot, where the events/actions that occur aren't the logical consequences of previous events/actions, but simply "business" used to fill time and/or crudely navigate from predetermined waypoint A and predetermined waypoint B.

>elite scientists
They were never implied to be “elite”. They were just scientists (some probably glorified lab assistants) who happened to accept the job from Weyland (which was considered delusional by most people). The scientists were just desperate enough to take a job that they didn’t get proper briefing for until after waking up from space travel

I didn’t know this, never got the impression from the movies (the 3 Ridley Scott ones at least). Just that Weyland was an über-rich CEO type that goes nuts and fakes his own death after buying into an ancient aliens schizo theory (that he turned out to be right about).
Alien just implies that his future company undergoes a merger with a Japanese one called Yutani and does interstellar mining, with interstellar science and military projects

Alien and Aliens are absolute idiot plots.
Grown, educated adults didn’t quarantine Kane. They just allowed him to roam freely, xD. And then they split up and went in different directions instead of watching each other’s backs, xD.

Aliens is also an idiot plot. Grown, trained marines should have demanded at least basic hazmat protection - something as simple as acid-resistant plastic suits that have been existing IRL for 50 years now
>>
Examples of real-world acid-resistant materials:

PTFE (Teflon) - extremely resistant to almost all acids

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) - widely used for acid tanks and pipes

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) - common in chemical containers

Polypropylene (PP) - good resistance to sulfuric and hydrochloric acid

Neoprene - used in chemical gloves and protective suits

Butyl rubber - excellent resistance to strong acids

Viton (fluoroelastomer) - high chemical and acid resistance

there's the entire sequence of events where they bring that dude puking up blood and seizing into their only escape vessel, slipping in a pool of blood like a banana peel, culminating with the entire thing exploding. "we're a colony ship, why are we investigating a decades old distress signal?" "why are you taking your helmet off on this unknown planet?". half the movie could have "yakety sax" playing over it or some kind of circus music. I know it's been discussed to death but I just watched it again the other night and it's a gag filled comedy that's played completely seriously.

The Weyland/Ash plot twist is also dumb.
A civilization that has spaceships and androids could have simply sent androids in hazmat suits to capture the aliens.

It isn't really a failing, I would say they're the only watchable idiot plots, and dramatic irony isn't necessarily key to an idiot plot.

>something as simple as acid-resistant plastic suits
The aliens that the marines encountered were unknown by anyone at the time outside of Weyland Yutani's inner circle who had read Ripley's report. When they ask if it's going to be a bug hunt and Lt Gorman replies with his "a xenomorph may be involved" he's literally saying "yes, there's an alien". As in some sort of alien lifeform, not the particular 8 foot tall, black, murder machine with an poison tail that we all know and love.

It really shits me that "xenomorph" was just adopted by retards as the name of the aliens. Asking why the marines didn't have acid proof armor is like asking why they didn't have radioactive shit-proof armor. They didn't know about aliens with acid for blood, until Ripley briefed them on the ship when they woke up from cryosleep.

>>
>>217246673
What it IS:
– An idiot plot is when the story only moves forward because characters act stupid in ways they don’t need to.
– They already know what’s going on, or could easily know, and the fix is obvious or low-effort.
– Nothing external is forcing them to act badly: no time pressure, no deception, no missing information.
– The writer needs the problem to continue, so the characters stop thinking or ignore clear solutions.
– If the characters behaved like normal, reasonably competent adults, the story would end very quickly.

What it is NOT:
– A character being dumb, reckless, arrogant, or annoying. Stories always have people like that.
– A human error, panic, fear, emotional decisions, or stress-based mistakes. Those are realistic.
– Ignorance or lack of knowledge. People can only act on what they know.
– A villain manipulating events, lying, hiding information, or setting a long-term trap.
– Coincidence, bad luck, or tragedy. Bad outcomes don’t automatically mean bad writing.

>Isn't this the same thing as a "comedy of errors"?
Comedy or errors can occur to unlucky smart people when circumstances just conspire against them. Idiot plot is more that the idiots themselves, not chance or fate, are the active drivers of the buffoonery, and simply stopping and talking to each other or other simple things that occur to average people would grind it all to a halt. They are related, since some comedies of error have idiots that further things, but a true idiot plot kind of relies on all the participants being too dull to resolve a simple problem.

So let me get this straight - some unfit bureaucrat was supposed to kidnap infected marines? is everyone in alien-verse stupid?
>>
>>217257263
Are you really this stupid? Every military for all time has been command pointing logistics and the army in a direction then the minor officers/grunts making it work.

>So let me get this straight - some unfit bureaucrat was supposed to kidnap infected marines?
Probably not kidnapping. He could lie and say "come with me and I'll get you to a medic" and then when they get back to the Sulaco medical bay, yutani just straps him down and waits for the ayylmao to pop out

She specifically told the Weyland-Yutani board of directors about the acid blood and they all stood there and acted incredulous at her like >"acid blood huh? heh, shes obviously gone crazy"

My guess is weyland-yutani intentionally withheld that information when calling in the marines, because they didn't want them to know what they would be up against.

Alien: Earth.

Half the characters are supposed to be savant geniuses or genetically engineered geniuses and yet they fuck up everything with just incredibly stupid decisions. A guy with a supercomputer for a brain gets himself killed because he locks himself in a cage with an incredibly dangerous alien because he decided to prop the door open to feed the alien rather than getting the lock fixed. At another point an incredibly dangerous alien escapes because the test tube its in is made out of glass that can shatter if it rolls off a table.
>>
>>217258483
The plot kind of puttered out.
Also the issue with having a plot centered around the most annoying people imaginable is even the audience gets sick of them, even if you do kill a few every once in a while.

>A guy with a supercomputer for a brain gets himself killed because he locks himself in a cage
Alien Earth is retarded, but then you have to remember that they're actually little kids in adult robot bodies, so they're going to do dumb shit.
The pajeet android literally got tricked into fucking everything up because the black guy said he wanted to be his friend.

>why are they playing this dumb 6-D chess instead of just sending thousands of androids in hazmat suits to capture it
They probably dont have thousands of androids chilling on board the Sulaco.
They lost contact with one colony and sent a small team to check it out.

Yeah; but the Elon Musk proxy super genius who runs the megacorp is retarded too as are the synths and the cyborgs. I don't think there's a single character that's actually intelligent. The supercomputer kids maybe have an excuse of being immature; but the adults don't.

That doesn't change the fact that he's retarded though. He doesn't make one intelligent decision in the entire show and he repeatedly fucks things up.

So, the plot of Future Man?
>>
>>217259064
>He doesn't make one intelligent decision in the entire show
He (supposedly) invented the technology to upload a human consciousness into a machine body. So he possesses technical or scientific intelligence, but no social or emotional intelligence. It seems like some kind of savant syndrome, but they were very careful to never say the word "savant" in the show because they didn't want a bunch of angry letters from autism activists.
>>
>>217246673
To be fair, some people are just idiots. Like, lets say you see some police, you're a parent to some kids, you have people depending on you, but you let your rage over police get the better of you and you block their way and impede their job, an illegal choice to begin with putting your own wellbeing in question, and furthermore your childrens financial stability possibly in question, then instead of complying with the police, you try to instead run them over, hitting one of the police to begin with when asked to get out of the car. And instead you get shot.
Unrealistic as fuck, right? But it could happen. Maybe, I mean, you'd have to be really fucking stupid to get yourself in this situation, but stupid people exist.

He's successfully running a company. I don't think he could be a full on autistic savant and do that. He'd just be sitting around in a lab working on projects. The problem I have with him is the disconnect between how intelligent I'm told he is and the stupid decisions he makes on camera.
