Presumably a wizard would have spent most of his life studying the arcane arts rather than training his body while the barbarian would have spent hers benching heavy things. The wizard may be able to compensate with strengthening spells on himself and weakening spells on the opponent but would lack combat training while i imagine the barbarian would have combat and hunting training as well as more experience on natural environments. A barbarian would have more chance of learning stuff that way than from a book while it would be the opposite in the wizards case.
