can someone explain what made this scene so good? why do the gunshots sound so powerful and why is it so intense?and why can't anyone do it again?
they trained for it properlythey used the on-set audio of the guns firing blanks or whatever, not sound effects in post
>>217260441>can someone explain what made this scene so good?Combination of the buildup, the location, the realism, and the number of extras. Also, it stands out since the movie that surrounds it is not an action movie, but a drama.>why do the gunshots sound so powerful and why is it so intense?I'm pretty sure they used the actual gunshots that were recorded during filming instead of inserting new ones in.>and why can't anyone do it again?Hollywood gatekeeping talent.
It wasn't THAT good, still to this day can't understand what is all the fuss aboutt. gun fag

>>217260441They used live rounds and 0 practical or special effects. Can't make movies like that anymore since Baldwin ruined it.
>>217260542it is very good, but the reason it stands out more today is because they rarely use blanks or squibs these days so you get very fake looking shootouts. i also think because the scene and context is quite grounded, which helps with the authenticity. contrast that with something like the latest john wick
>>217261156also since they shot it all live the acoustics were amazing, you cant replicate the echoing off buildings like that
for me its when he goes from all smiles to getting in on in .5 seconds
Modern Hollywood finds guns icky and won't even use real guns with blank adaptation anymore, because a lot of celebrities refuse to use them and would have their character not use guns if they could.
>>217260441Simple tactics and manual of arms demonstration. Great sound capturing the echoing through the plaza. But it completely shits itself with Pacino receiving zero flak for cowboy 1 man SWAT hostage headshot bullshit. Ending needs the tension of him throwing caution to the wind while he's still not suspended or worse.
>>217260511Do celebrities actually hold on to any of the skills they learn while making movies? Excluding Keanu Reeves
>>217260441this film is amazing if you fast forward any time there's a woman on screen
They move and cover themselves like an actual gunfight. Now they just send actors to flat range 3 gun faggots like Taran Tactical and every scene is just them shooting several guys at point blank like John Wick.
>>217260441its notthe entire movie is a horrid soap operaautistic gun fags jizz over this because the gun go boom and they like reload right or something gay

There's no tight cutoff even compared to regular gunshot sounds let alone sterile foley shits.

>>217264363i dont know how a hollywood sound editor would even know how to design such an authentic audio space without just going into downtown and firing some guns
Heat is really overrated. It's not bad or anything but it's not anything special but people talk about it like it's an all time classic action movie
>>217264514it is an all time classic action scene with an all time great ensemble cast but like people have been saying it's not an action movie. It's sort of an outlier in the heist genre. Mann liked to ride that line back in the old days.
>>217264514all the Natalie Portman shit was pointless and unnecessaryYou could cut it out of the movie and no one would notice
>>217264160That isn't true. How long do you think it took for surplus war on terror supplies to be made available to domestic law enforcement? The late 2000s? The militarization of the police in the 90s was a direct response to a lot of high profile incidents as well as the police being outgunned by criminals.

>>217264696I give a fuck

>>217267925>Not the whole “murdering brown hookers” bit.You gotta' step it up, brother.
so what's the deal with firing blanks on set now. do they still do it? or did the alec baldwin fiasco ruin everything. im thinking of that strange things clip where the girl is firing a gun and it looks completely retarded.
>>217268042Practical effects on general need to make a return. Squibs and blanks most especially. I’m tired of this ultra-soft, homosexual safety culture in its entirety, but film should be extra-unsafe.“Uhhhhh blanks aren’t safe. It needs to be safe uhhhhhh.”I want actors to bleed for their craft. They get paid enough.
>>217268042The point is they nearly always (before Heat and after it) replace the sound of things like gunshots in editing, with fake foley sound effects. They even did this in Heat at first during production, but Michael Mann and others in the sound crew said no, that sounds like shit, put the original production sound back. The blanks they fire on set aren't usually for the sound, they're for the smoke and flash and slight recoil so it looks more natural than just holding a gun and saying "bang" when you pull the trigger. Baldwin didn't fire a blank, he fired a real bullet. But blanks can still kill you if you put the gun barrel right against someone a la Brandon Lee.
>>217262280Way of the gun (2000)

>>217260441because you touch yourself at night
>>217263195I'd crash out too if I had that many vowels in my name, to say nothing about all the shit on top of the letters
>>217268371Way of the gun has some good choices in guns and occasionally in how they're used but it's far more Hollywood action movie than the Heat shootout. It's like a modern interpretation of a western for how the big shootout goes. Bringing one extra mag in a jacket pocket and then wasting it hip firing into a wall isn't on the same level as the shoot and scoot suppressive fire and foresight of concealing a full combat load of 5.56 under a suit jacket. Way of the Gun is cool though, don't get me wrong they're just not really comparable as for why they're cool.
>>217267925>Not the whole “murdering brown hookers” bityou're not getting it on
>>217264627The boring shit elevates the action. If it was only action the movie would be boring
>>217264363They do, just like almost every single household in America has paintbrushes. But just because you have the tools doesn't mean you know how to use them. I don't expect hollywood sound editors to know how to replicate the sound of a shootout in a downtown corridor surrounded by skyscrapers anymore than I expect the average homeowner to know to to pull off convincing object source lighting for example.
>>217261156yes anon they fired off hundred and hundreds of round of live ammunition on the streets of downtown LA at extras, props and buildings
>>217269377that's just how we did things back in the day
>>217262228this extends to anything that involves sound and image, Bloodborne is an excellent game but the audio effects on weapons and enviroments is dogshit.
