What are some of the absolute essentials that are must see? So far I have seen:>The Killer>A Better Tomorrow I & II>Hard BoiledGod of Gamblers>City on Fire>In The Mood for Love>Tiger on the Beat
>>217262485If you're into extreme cinema, some of the HK Category 3 movies are decent. Look up The Untold Story and Dr Lamb for an idea of what Cat. 3 movies are like. And since you like Woo definitely watch Bullet in the Head. But make sure it's the full uncut version. Oh, and Riki-Oh The Story of Riki is great.
>>217262623Yeah I'm huge on Woo films and especially anything with Chow Yun Fat, so anything else like that is where I'm at. I'll check out Bullet then.>Dr LambAh horror stuff. Only a little into that, I'm mostly into action and comedy.
>>217262485Why are Asians so good at cinema?
>>217262745Naturally cool locations with unique lighting.
>>217262485God of Gamblers Returns
>>217262704Riki Oh is an action comedy martial arts gore movie. Think the ridiculous over the top silly 80s gore movies like Re-Animator and Evil Dead 2 but martial arts instead of horror.
>>217262745They aren't.Only the cream of the crop make a splash in the West, the vast majority of directors and movies are absolute mediocrities
>>217262911Woo movies didn't have much of an audience and his Western made efforts flopped.
>>217262911I think Police Story, as an example of an action hit, and Chunking Expression, as an example of a critical and artistic hit, far outclass any Hollywood movies made in the same decades.
>>217262745Asia is bigger than Japan, China, and SK. Where is the SEA kino?
>>217262485Long Arm of the LawElection
>>217263233Japan has some good kino and SK seemed to focus more on TV shows. China is the slop bucket of Asia when it comes to cinema, which should be no surprise since they eat up literally every capeshit movie they get.
>>217262485If you're a complete noob to this stuff i'd go with these:Infernal AffairsDrunken Masters 1 and 2Police StorySupercop (just for the last 15 mins alone)Snake in the Eagle's ShadowA Chinese Ghost StoryElection 1 and 2ExiledMad DetectiveGod of GamblersMr. VampireThe Blade (1995)Eastern CondorsThrowdownLifelineFight back to SchoolOperation Scorpio>>217262623Those are absolute trash, but entertaining.>>217262745Coz they rip off the french, particularly Melville.
You've already seen the best. You can still watch Bullet in the Head or move on to Hard Target and Replacement Killers, or Big Hit if you're looking for something more comedic. >>217262745OP is looking for heroic bloodshed movies, not faggy ass kdramas. Hang yourself.
>>217263315Very based, I'll check these out. I think I saw Police Story once a long time ago.>>217263324>You've already seen the bestI know. I'm still cool with whatever comes at least moderately close.
>>217263400Most of what anon listed is worth watching. Watch Police Story 1-2 and Supercop (Police Story 3) and Drunken Master 2 all starring Jackie Chan immediately if you want to see the very best HK kung fu choreography. Once Upon a Time in China 1-2 and Fist of Legend with Jet Li are also amazing kung fu movies from the early to mid 90s.
>>217263544For sure, I'll be checking almost every recc in the thread.
>>217262485I implore you, if you like Honk Kong movies, martial arts movies, Wuxia, or anything similar, please check out this Youtube channel. Its full of 2$ budget kung-fu action movies from the 1970s.https://www.youtube.com/@WuTangCollectionDope/videos

>>217262485Stephen Chow's Chinese Odyssey 1+2 are seen as him going "legit" in dramatic acting. Fight back to School is his breakout. King of Comedy is his 1st as Chaplin-esque auteur. For horror, def Boxer's Omen, Hex, Troublesome Night 1 (1997). Wai Ka-fai (Johnnie To's writer) is quirky fun with heart. His debut Too Many Ways to be Number 1 is must-see. Fruit Chan, kind of the HK Sean Baker, debut in Made in Hong Kong 1997 is must-see. Golden Chicken 2002 is a screwball about a whore's life as the history of HK.

>>217262485there was one I've not heard anyone talk about, made in the early 2000s I think, modern feeling about two rival hitmen. there's a memorable scene at the start where the guy swings a satchel full of grenades into a cell.anyonw remember the title?
>>217265370remembered it, Full Time Killer, 2001
>>217265427Based, it sounds kinda cool so I'll check it out.
>>217265433I liked it, saw it around when it first came out. has quite a few cool parts, don't know why it isn't better known
>>217265469From HK yourself? A lot of these movies aren't big outside HK so they aren't know. I think the only really famous one of the bunch is The Killer and even that ended up with a shitty Western remake.
>>217265487I watched a lot of Hong Kong stuff in general, martial arts mostly but some others too. this one was listed on sharereactor which was a torr site back in the day that put up descriptions and posters of new releases - had some good international films. it had sort of the old video rental shop feel to it, so you could pick and choose and explore a bit.this one stood out for me because of the different feel, cool factor and quality of it.i guess there are a lot it films that aren't scene simply because they're 'local', same for Japan and other countries.
>>217262485All good choices and suffice to say, you've seen the best of the best.

>>217267201Is Jackie Chan's Hong Kong era actually pretty good?
>>217267201I would add:Lau Kar-leungChang ChehJimmy Wang Yu
>>217262485They are very boring honestly i tried but all of them seems dubed in post prod. It's just awfull.
>>217267243It's literally his best work. He fell off massively when he went to Hollywood. As did John Woo.
>>217267243I prefer to it to his Hollywood stuff. Police Story 3, Wheels on Meals, and Drunken Master 2 belong in his top ten. I like the story, the humor, the characters in Jackie's movies so I also love the first Drunken Master, but it's really ancient and it shows. I would hesitate to recommend them too far back. Rumble in the Bronx is also good. Just try them if you don't mind old movies.Jackie Chan isn't just a stunt guy. People went to see his personality and comedy and he displayed that best in his HK movies as opposed to Rush Hour where he had to adapt to his comedy to Chris Tucker and the english speaking audience.
I haven't seen that many HK films but these are my favorites
>>217267271YesI forgot to mentionJet LiMichelle YeohYuen Woo-ping
>>217265427>Full Time Killer, 2001Great pic, underrated flick. Andy Lau playing a villain character was a good use of casting against type. Any other good examples of post-Tarantino HK crime films?>>217267275You might be watching mandarin dubs
>>217267475Other than more Johnnie To and Infernal Affairs, idk. That's around the time the HK industry died.
>>217262485New Police Story, a better version of TDK
