Been watching Air Disasters on the Smithsonian Channel. Are passengers on aircraft safer now or are the risks just different?

They are, in the US at least. The passenger plane crash that happened in DC about a year ago when a female helicopter pilot flew into a airliner was the first fatal commercial airline crash in over a decade in the US
