The movie is based off a French novel called "Traumnovelle" (Dream Book). What the lights in every scene symbolize is the dreamworld the elites have put up around you. By the time of the orgy scene an everything leading up to and around it, the lights disappear. This is the stark, cold stark reality of everything. The dream is over and you're now awake to how things actually operate behind the shadows and in the waking world as oppposed to the dream one.
