Why was there no push back in this scene from anybody like Mike or Jonathan? Statistically, somebody in this room had to have been homophopic. I know they would've been S1 Lucas level of unlikeable to the audience, but it would've added more depth and be less clumsy. That arc should be of inner and outer acceptance, that way Will grows along side that character.

It puts the activist types into a state of heightened alert because they struggle to distinguish between the mere depiction of discrimination vs. celebration and endorsement of it, and they don't want to give any legitimacy, space, or platform for homophobia either - even as a moral flaw in some character(s) that is eventually redeemed. Stranger Things isn't really the show to explore these topics anyway, but the fact that they chose to develop Will's character in this direction over several seasons and then tied it up in a way that felt rushed, safe, unearned, out of place, and inauthentic is one of many casualties of the bloated cast and overcooked script.
