Obviously they needed the vehicles to break down in the Red paddock. He's still the bad guy in the film if you look closely. Like I said, in the film Grant is the wildcard/antagonist while Nedry is the goodish guy. In another sense the story is about 2 mathematicians; Nedry is a programmer who operates in knowns and tight constraint's/predictability while Malcolm is a chaostician who deals with unknowables and unpredictability. We are witnessing 2 math nerds fall victim to Hammonds naivety and Grants curiosity (itself a form of naivety--who jumps out of a ride vehicle after having went through a Rex paddock?) Even the little boy dino nerd stayed in his seat, even after being attacked by a Rex and having it pushed into a tree.
