Their little department surely would have.
>>
>>217298278
That's explained in the show. Mulder is well known enough that making him a martyr would cause more trouble than he can cause by himself, and with a bit of direction he's also far too useful for tying up loose ends to be disposed of.
>>
>>217298278
Why would you think that?
>>
>>217298546
>making him a martyr

No martyr's suicide has ever changed anything. Even publicly inb4'ing your inevitable and obvious suicide wont stop the coroner from ruling "no foul play". Seeking official whistleblower protection just puts your name on the elites' shortlist of people to suicide. In the show, Mulder survives because his nominal dad was a spook and his biological father was an arch-spook.
>>
>>217298931
In early seasons, Deep Throat and X (and Senator Matheson) were interested in keeping Mulder and Scully alive. I always thought that, in the grand scheme of things, Mulder and Scully were of little consequence to The Syndicate's dealings. One man, and his chick, alone cannot fight the future, and stuff. It's like when CSM almost snipes Frohike (which was in the original script), but in the end he chooses not to because Frohike didn't get the whole story right.

The most unbelievable detail in the entire show is Mulder not knowing what the fucking Fiji Mermaid was.
>>
>>217298546
They'd just fire him and have a media smear campaign to discredit him IRL.

I never cared for the overarching Syndicate plot though, I could never suspend my disbelief that aliens capable of interstellar travel cannot figure out a better way to conquer the planet than some goofy clandestine conspiracy bullshit, and that the government is capable enough to both be in on it and hide it from the public.

But also later in the show isn't it revealed that he's really kept alive by his real dad the cancer man? Like one of the main guys behind all the conspiracies is mulders secret dad, so the guy keeps doing his shit but also doesn't want his son to get killed so he makes up reasons to explain why they kept him alive

Why didn't they ever mention the Illuminati though? You'd kind of expect Mulder to bring them up at some point.

Season 1, Episode 17. "E.B.E."
It's not my favorite episode, but it neatly encapsulates the whole feel of the show and the general alien coverup culture in the early 90s.

It's even still broadcast OTA on Comet to this day. They play 3 or 4 episodes back to back every night.

It was peculiar the aura the show had about it in the 90s. I knew I would be in for a shock if I watched an episode and it felt so heavily ominous, but I rewatch it now and it seems lighter.

It's pretty simple. The people running the town were lapsed Satanists. Some stupid kids opened the gate and either Satan himself or some minion came through to collect his dues from his worshippers and their kids.

Mulder's family was well connected and part of the conspiracy, so he essentially got a pass all the time to keep going (all unknown to him for quite a while though). It's also why every time he got really close, he'd get fucked over at the last minute or be misdirected somehow. He was somewhat of a puppet to them but also went outside the boundaries from time to time, especially as people in the conspiracy started dying off from the alien rivalry shit.
>>
>>217305436
I knew you were going to say that.

How does this Fox network show from 30 fucking years ago so utterly and completely humiliate all the "prestige" TV of today?
>>
>>217305558
Right place, right time. Like The Twilight Zone or Star Trek.

One thing that's striking about The X-Files is how good it looks. It's easily as well-directed and well-shot as almost any celebrated show in the last 15 years. Other than some of the cliffhangers you wouldn't even know it was a network show.

Well that’s why they put Scully with him to debooonk all his cases in case they ever needed to do that.
>>217298278
It was a little different in the 90s, before the internet, conspiracy-minded weirdos were easier to marginalize.
>>
>>217298278
Naw. Back then, early 90s, being a conspiracy theorist was kooky and funny and kind of cool. You could say crazy shit and people would just nod and go "True that" and nobody gave a shit. We were just going from 12 years of Republican leadership to a democrat that was "hip and cool" and a lot of formerly taboo stuff was no longer seen as taboo.

Shit, me and my friends were edgy as fuck back then and nobody cared. We fit in with the zeitgeist. It's different now. Social media was too hyper leftist, too pro government for so long that fringe beliefs were seen as "schizo". We still call them that here on this fucking board, in fact.
>>
>>217304269
I know a lot of people complain about the Myth-arc, but that’s why I love it. It nails the FEELING of ufo conspiracy theories so well. The threat is malevolent, unspecified, and always looming but never quite here.
>>
>>217305978
It's strange how much the evolution of conspiracy theories and their believers have changed. A good amount of theories pre-2000 had some pretty good reasoning or at least a little evidence to back them, but now it's just genuine retards and schizos believing just about any object is part of some big conspiracy.
>>
>>217305990
>lot of people complain about the best part
wut
>>
>>217306039
Yeah, that too. I remember being on the old ATS website in the late 90s, early 2000s and prior to 911, there was real dialog and a real community. After 911, it was just the same kind of political pissing matches you find on /pol/
>>
>>217306066
NTA but people complain about the main arc for the later part of the show where it becomes very clear the writers hadn't planned the arc out that far, so it gets confused with itself and has some really shitty plot points. The early part was excellent but it starts to really have trouble around the season 6 or season 7 mark.

Agua Mala is the comfiest episode of the later seasons. There are too many comfy episodes in the early seasons to even bother naming them.
>>
>>217306522
Any episode that takes place in a big forest in the winter is automatically kino, I don't care how tacky the plot is.
>>
What was the point of the revival seasons? They bring it back and they still couldn't properly resolve the ending.
>>
>>217306998
It was during the beginning of revivals, so X Files was one of the first to get the treatment. I don't think I ever rewatched any of the newer seasons, I watched them just once on TV and never again since it seemed like even Duchovny wasn't even enjoying being there. The only episode I remember is one about their kid and another about some robots at a sushi restaurant.

Doggett got done dirty. His son should have been kidnapped by some shit like the Finders and he'd have an obsession with tracking down cultist faggots and kicking them in the balls with steel toed boots until they puked blood and gave up names and places. As it was, he was just keeping the seat warm for Mulder to come back even though you could tell Duchovny was checked out and just didn't care anymore.
>>
>>217308629
What are some of the best Doggett episodes? Any where he kicks ass and actually wins? I get a little tired of episodes where the cult or whatever wins in the end.

Yes and no. Sure they were marginalized, but at the same time they would get invited to TV shows all the time for the sake of sensationalism. Even after 9/11, it was allowed to criticize the official narrative on TV. It's mostly after COVID that there has been a strict ban on "conspiracy theories" on TV.
