They consider that subject matter unfit for Bond and want them it rewritten with a more "action movie fit for streaming" directive.The auditions happening in February are going to decide the project's fate. If Villeneuve doesn't play ball, he'll be canned by Spring and replaced with a work-for-hire as Heyman lobbied for Villeneuve and is now regretting it as he can't get a leash on his ambitions. Denis Villeneuve is very likely to drop out in a few months, is the feeling, but the producers are promising to back off but also have to protect their interests. Amazon wants a Bond that can make the kind of dent in the box office that big AAA franchises like Avatar and Avengers make to justify their 10 billion investment in buying MGM and EON. Knight's current script is way too cerebral, verbose and experimental and simply too dark and gritty. Villeneuve only wants to direct that script and the conflict of interest will only deepen as auditions prove new ground for conflict. As previously disclosed in another thread, the main "Bond girl" is actually the protagonist of the story and they take a page out of the novel version of The Spy Who Loved Me where the story starts with her and we follow her for a bit before Bond shows up. Moneypenny and Q don't appear as the story is gadgetless, which is bad for sponsors and a huge point of contention internally. In another "subversion" (which the movie is chock-full of) Bond doesn't sleep with the female lead, who is explicitly bisexual (but moreso leans on lesbian) and is a very on-the-nose riff on Lisbeth Salander. She was a trafficked victim who is also connected with the development of the AI weapon. Callum Turner is not hired for Bond, and the recent report saying it's an open secret and a done deal is nothing but tabloid nonsense. He IS Amazon's first choice and it IS true that that is only so because they think they can get a coup on Dua Lipa for the title song by hiring him, a very corporate mindset and decision but alas. Butler will humor the audition for producer goodwill but is not pining for it, same with Elordi. Damson Idris wants to do it and be the first black Bond, as per his reps.The project is on very thin ice with top Amazon brasses, who signed off on Villeneuve because he's a big name that gets them prestige clout but they figured he's a Nolan type, who can make blockbusters with a prestige sheen but they're obviously off the mark. If I had to put it on a scale, 7 out of 10 chance he either gets canned or quits. Auditions will decide that. The script also has Bond torturing a man by burying his thumb in a bullet hole on his chest, which is something that Pascal was appaled by. The script feels like a Fincher spy thriller than anything that can be commercially exploited and the feeling is very muted. If Villeneuve walks, Knight walks too. Or if Villeneuve is fired, so will Knight. Knight is more open to script changes but Villeneuve is standing his ground and wants concrete power.It is likely that Bond 26 is not released in the 2020's and will take twice as long as No Time To Die to be produced and released. Amazon has already burned too much time and money on this incarnation with Villeneuve and is going to end up regretting it. The quick-fix solution with Leitch as the top contender is also in doubt because the top brasses want the biggest director around and will not cede on that, even if they're not happy with the state of things.

Before Villeneuve, they were in talks with Emerald Fennell (Pascal was high on her being the first female Bond director!), Bart Layton, David Michod, Edward Berger and Justin Kurzel and others in that general studio/indie sphere, with some already in the general Amazon MGM talent pool. All of their pitches were very deconstructive, even more so than the Knight/Villeneuve script thus far, and all of them were mostly taking the meetings just for networking. The general feeling around the industry is that many journeymen in the action game were happily pining for it (including Bond veteran Martin Campbell, mind you) but that Amazon was dead set that Bond had to be a prestige franchise with the "biggest and brightest" involved. Basically, it had to be "hip" rather than "old". Yes, that's the mindset of the top-tier executives. A24 and NEON talent being brought in for talks was thrown around a lot more than it should've been. No one knows what to do with the franchise, least of all the people who own it. Villeneuve is indeed a big Bond fan BUT of the novels, not the movies that much and he agreed to it so he can be the FIRST director to "properly" adapt Fleming's Bond which, given everything already discussed, is wildly off the mark. Anyhow, these next few months are as DECISIVE as it comes. If Villeneuve drags this out any longer, the project will oficially enter development hell if Amazon's top brasses don't do away with the notion that Bond is a prestige franchise that should be in the Oscar race and not just action movies. Unless this changes, the project just simply won't materialize and just dissolve into the ether. Daniel Craig's stamp on the franchise is too big.
