The chinese version is 1:1 book adaptation of the first book, it's 30 episodes long.
The Netflix version is 8 episodes long, with mixed character swap (black people/main chara is now a girl, the usual netflix), I dropped it after the first episode but from what I read it here, they did a rushed adaptation of the first book and went into the second book too.

I just finished reading the first novel. It definitely wasn't.

Another major change was skipping a lot of the ETO content, iirc netflix version didn't even acknowledge the adventists/reformers/etc.

It's hard to recommend either the netflix or tencent version though. Obviously tencent if accuracy is important to you, but chinese TV production is obviously a decade or two behind US. Acting in both isn't great, Wade in netflix is probably the only standout character, while Da Shi in tencent is great while his netflix actor feels like a miscast.

The author is a bad writer, and after he finished every book he realized he actually hated the characters he wrote so he made up new characters for the next book. This was the only way to do an adaptation for TV. It is actually kind of funny how the characters just get worse as the series goes on. There are some good side characters in book 2, and a single good character in book 3, but the main character of each book just gets worse from the already low point of book 1. Cheng Xin might be the worst written character I have ever seen in any media ever. Most books don't get movie or tv adaptations, and there are far more deserving books than this shit stain of a series.

The only reason it got as big as it did was because western publishers were pushing it during the mid to late 00's because everyone was trying to get in on the economic rise of china by sucking their dicks with things like culture. It is why that stupid Cirque du Soleil chink ripoff was plastered on every single billboard across America. This series was literally the best they had to offer and it isn't even worth the paper it is printed on.

I like how the books get conceptually more complex every entry. The first book was honestly a bit retarded and merely written to keep the reader's attention with constant suspense and the timer ticking down, but the concepts aren't actually interesting.

Book 2 is the perfect "dunning kruger" deep sounding bullshit that normalfags fall for. So the 2nd book is the one that everyone talks about and people say is their favorite. It's the rick & morty "I fucking love science" (But I can't do calculus) crowd praising this entry.

The third book actually comes up with legitimate insightful and novel stuff that makes you think and sticks with you. However it goes way over the heads of most people reading it as they don't proper grasp the implications of dynamic laws of physics and the straight up horror it implies. This is the true masterpiece of the trilogy.

Simple fact of the matter is, the show is loaded with really bad acting, bad story telling, dull characters, a dreadfully boring subject matter, and obnoxiously over the top woke DEI nonsense that is relentlessly thrown in the audience's face with every scene and every segment of dialogue. Further, the fact that the entire production is very China-centric only magnifies the problems with the show.
