Real answer
>How many people sign up for show?
>How many people just stay on and forget to cancel their subscriptions after?
>How many people watched the show, were about to cancel, but started watching the next "big" show, after this one ended
>How many of them watched a few episodes, didn't like it but were watching other shows we introduced
>How many people renewed a membership
The list goes on, I work in marketing data and the main criteria of whether or not a show was profitable is 1. How many viewers/new subscribers it brings in (and returning subscriptions), but most importantly 2. How many viewers might not like the "big new show" from point 1, but will get interested in "suggested for you" or "things you think we'll like". The main goal is subscription retention, the second being new subscribers. These are how shows get made and cancelled, and keep going, and are deemed profitable or not. I'm not fucking joking.

People in science circles liked it. They didn't love it, because it's dumbed down for a general audience. But they liked it.

It's gratifying for a person with a background in the sciences, because it's almost as if it's popularizing science and making it more accessible for the average person. We love it when people off the street are even slightly excited about science.

The title, Three Body Problem.
Sounds an awful like 'Everything All At Once" which I also didn't watch.

I don't watch anything with pretentious book sounding titles. They're always shitty long drawn out dramas with blue-green color filters, and sassy black cops solving mysteries that don't really go anywhere.

>>
>>217329001
Nigga the female scientist in that video is a Chinese male scientist in the novel.

It cannot be understated how much the series raped the original in everything which leftists typically cry about - it raceswapped, genderswapped and nationalityswapped almost the entire main cast lmao.

There’s some cringy scenes like >>217328410 and combine a few characters together, but overall it’s a decent adaptation. It is in chronological order though, so they have some stuff early on that isn’t until later in the books. But I think that decision makes a lot of sense. I think what changes there are are reasonable for the change in medium from book to show.

I have little familiarity with the source material, but wasn't the casting inconsistent?
>>
>>217331309
>combine a few characters together

Don't they split the main character into like 3 or at least give other characters shit he does. If not make the lead character a woman.
>>
>>217331537
I meant both first seasons of those two shows. Casting wasn't inconsistent. Pedro did a decent joel. The potato face didn't look the part but by the end of the season she did embody Ellie despite not looking like her. The show strayed a little but for the most part it did 1:1 adaptations of major story beats.
>>
>>217331553
I don't recall the season too well, but what I remember hating about it is that they linked all the main characters together. The oxford 5 or some shit. It was stupid. I can't even remember which character is which in the book, but all the swapping ruined it for me.
>>
>>217331276
The chinese version is 1:1 book adaptation of the first book, it's 30 episodes long.
The Netflix version is 8 episodes long, with mixed character swap (black people/main chara is now a girl, the usual netflix), I dropped it after the first episode but from what I read it here, they did a rushed adaptation of the first book and went into the second book too.
>>
>>217326717
I wish they kept the fat snack guy

>>217331587
>they did a rushed adaptation of the first book and went into the second book too.
that was probably the only smart thing they did but they still did it wrong. Another major change was skipping a lot of the ETO content, iirc netflix version didn't even acknowledge the adventists/reformers/etc.

It's hard to recommend either the netflix or tencent version though. Obviously tencent if accuracy is important to you, but chinese TV production is obviously a decade or two behind US. Acting in both isn't great, Wade in netflix is probably the only standout character, while Da Shi in tencent is great while his netflix actor feels like a miscast.
>>
>>217331674
Yeah Wade is great in the Netflix version.
>>
I was drunk and saw Netflix pushing it when it was released. Thought I’d just pass out to it… but I laughed so hard at how ‘silly’ it is, can’t think of a better term… like a shotgun blast of batshit plot points, almost indistinguishable from parody in a way. Was a good night, desu.

Got me to read the novels, which are wonderful, and probably my favorite sci fi of the past 20 years. But that initial experience of catching this bad adaptation was worth it. Have no faith in a season 2 even though it’s covering the good shit.

The author is a bad writer, and after he finished every book he realized he actually hated the characters he wrote so he made up new characters for the next book. This was the only way to do an adaptation for TV. It is actually kind of funny how the characters just get worse as the series goes on. There are some good side characters in book 2, and a single good character in book 3, but the main character of each book just gets worse from the already low point of book 1. Cheng Xin might be the worst written character I have ever seen in any media ever. Most books don't get movie or tv adaptations, and there are far more deserving books than this shit stain of a series.

The only reason it got as big as it did was because western publishers were pushing it during the mid to late 00's because everyone was trying to get in on the economic rise of china by sucking their dicks with things like culture. It is why that stupid Cirque du Soleil chink ripoff was plastered on every single billboard across America. This series was literally the best they had to offer and it isn't even worth the paper it is printed on.

the chinese one is cheap and long, but it actually has good sci-fi content when it does. you can tell the guy who wrote the books is really into it. narratively its a little stupid, but all the alien stuff is nice.
>>
The "teardrop" moment will be the cliffhanger to season 3 of the show as D&D call it the "Red wedding moment of 3 body problem"

If they could have sped up production I am pretty sure normalfags will be enamored with the show if they see the teardrop moment.

To be honest I liked the third book the best because the "dimension decay" was genuinely novel and a cool concept to think about a downward spiral of constant escape from higher planes.
>>
>>217326717
Despite the mostly dogshit casting I really liked it. 2 year wait between season 1 hurt its momentum but fuck it, shows are rarely popular from the first season anyways so it makes sense for them to do it the way there are to gauge if it even works with 1 then work on 2 and 3 at the same time
>>
>>217326717
The books are retarded btw
>>
>write book as an allegory for Chinese people destroying humanity to warn others
>destroying scientific progress, slowly invading over 400 years, even self insert character giving warning
>gets past censors
>people are too stupid to understand the message
>write third book spelling out that book is written with message intended to bypass censors
>still gets past censors
>people are still too stupid to understand the message
I think we need to start looking at how many chinks are involved in particle reactors.
These books were so fucking disgusting. Seeing into the bugman mind. "If we can't all survive nobody can." The hypercompetent leader guy running things tries to save humanity after the crazy bitch woman dooms the entirety of earth again, but she says stop; so he immediately turns himself in and is executed. This is like 3 sentences. It's farcical. The crazy bitch isn't responsible for killing humanity because 'people chose you to be in that position'.
If you want a reason to absolutely hate China these are the books.
Also the ending is aliens destroying the universe, then a scoreboard pops up saying which species survived as if that's a win.
>>
I like how the books get conceptually more complex every entry. The first book was honestly a bit retarded and merely written to keep the reader's attention with constant suspense and the timer ticking down, but the concepts aren't actually interesting.

Book 2 is the perfect "dunning kruger" deep sounding bullshit that normalfags fall for. So the 2nd book is the one that everyone talks about and people say is their favorite. It's the rick & morty "I fucking love science" (But I can't do calculus) crowd praising this entry.

The third book actually comes up with legitimate insightful and novel stuff that makes you think and sticks with you. However it goes way over the heads of most people reading it as they don't proper grasp the implications of dynamic laws of physics and the straight up horror it implies. This is the true masterpiece of the trilogy.

>>217332730
You're actually right but it was because it was written and published during the Jiang Zemin period of China in 2006 which was the time with the least censorship ever in China so he kind of got away with it.

A couple of years ago the writer actually got Jack Ma'd. After reappearing after a couple of months of being a "missing person" he suddenly retracted all of his subtle lines about it being allegory and claimed that it doesn't reflect the CCP and their policies at all and that it's "a simple sci-fi story".

I really appreciate you noticing these things however. This is a vital piece of Chinese literature that will survive the test of time whenever the CCP inevitably fails and collapses.

Certainly it couldn't be that 21st century western scifi is all dogshit, of course not.
>>
>>217326717
Two things
1, The book is a hit in changland because almost nobody in China writes scifi (and after 3BP success it remained the same due to chang retarfed censorship)
So while the west enjoy their rise and fall of scifi trends for decades, three chinky problems is just another drop of water in the ocean for western market
2, The series is China’s core, aka it represented perfectly chink mentality
it is almost 100% the retelling of China’s 100 years of shameful display but with scifi lens: the Earth is China, primitive and hopelessly outmatched, and the ayys are foreign powers (if the Sophon bot being a katana-wielding japanese woman isn’t already slapping that to your face)
It also pinned the “dogs eat dogs” worldview chinks love so much all over the places, ends justify means, killing billions is ok as long as it archives your goal, and the woman to is basically the representation of western liberal ideas are mocked like a retard
Those are harder for western audience to relate to, who enjoy superiority and prosperity in most of their modern history and can spare a more sympathetic ideology.
So conclusion, you whitebois are the aliens in this story, of course you wouldnt like it

It's entertainment we are talking about. Nothing more, nothing less. Simple fact of the matter is, the show is loaded with really bad acting, bad story telling, dull characters, a dreadfully boring subject matter, and obnoxiously over the top woke DEI nonsense that is relentlessly thrown in the audience's face with every scene and every segment of dialogue. Further, the fact that the entire production is very China-centric only magnifies the problems with the show. The actress in the role of the main character is a very unlikable person (pic relate), comes across as arrogant and condescending in interviews. Coincidentally, her character has the same traits. It's just a bad show in all directions, which is why low viewership is understandable.
>>
>>217328410
Can always count on Netflix to portray the young white man as a buffoon, low-IQ, racist, misogynist and bigot. If that was a black man approaching those two women, they would have giggled like two schoolgirls and heaped praises upon the black man for being the greatest of everything that ever existed in the history of forever. Netflix absolutely loves it's woke DEI bullshit. And people wonder why viewership is dying.

Sure, but that's not an achievement, they actively casted the ugliest people possible for every role. The tencent show was fucking boring, maybe I'll watch S2 if the main chink is a vaguely interesting actor.

The book is on my To Read list, but I don't think I shall be watching any adaptations in the foreseeable future. Already got burned with Witcher and Sandman. Maybe in the future (after the race war probably) the mindset will change, but now everyone making an adaptation of anything is starting from an assumption that the source material is inherently problematic and they must improve it.

You should absolutely not watch the Netflix show, it's both awful and spoils the later shit.

it's supposed to be a videogame retard

Save yourself the time. It is not great. The prose is really terrible, the characters are awful, the ideas are mid, andat the end it is deeply unsatisfying. The chink series is just the books, word for word, scene for scene, only it looks really terrible and takes twice as long to get through, so if you're going to read 30 episodes of subtitles you might as well read the books instead.

This retard doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about. There is no "spoiling" books as each one of the books is its own thing with its own characters and own story. After their books are over with all the characters involved just disappear from the universe.

They’re both shit and both suck actually. Stick to the books and keep your sanity.

The scene with the physicist getting battered by the commie chick was only thing I enjoyed about the show, but then that was also in the books so.

It wasn't supposed to be a documentary
