Originally, there were only supposed to be three books in total. Martin planned to finish them in the 1990's. But then the series became an unexpected success, so he churned out more books and added random stuff and storylines. The problem is that by now there is so much bloat and meandering lines in the story, that it's virtually impossible to finish. Evenmore so when you consider his method of writing, where he rewirtes a single chapter over and over again, just to try out different scenarios.It's hilarious when you think about it. That one guy has tricked a huge production company that lost billions of potential revenue from the shitty ending of the TV-show. He cornered thousands of loyal fans into an abusive relationship, where he can ramble about football or politics or whatever and they will still listen to him. He could fart into a microphone and they would analyse it to see if there are any hints to the next book in the fart. The guy is a genius.
