Ever thought about how the original Jake post Avatar 1 is actually just dead and replaced by some Na'vi who merely has the same memories? It's not like Eywa actually transfers souls - she can only move information - so the real Jake (the emergent consciousness of his brain) died in that cripple body while Eywa merely pulled a ctrl c + ctrl v onto the avatar.
This is backed up by James Cameron saying that Eywa does not actually store anybody's souls in her 'afterlives', rather just copies of their consciousness as of the most recent moment they interfaced with her. These copies also never update or change even if someone connects to her to talk to them, which is how Neteyam didn't know he died or how he died despite how many times the Sully family must have visited him since his demise.
Kinda makes the whole series feel a lot more nihilistic and depressing

Honestly, I think about this sometimes. How Jake is actually dead and its just a copy of who he was in his brothers Avatar at that. The idea you're going to wake up and your body is dead and your alive in a new body? Like, what? Im dead and in a new body? You mean Im a new person who remembers being a former person.

First time?

I remember Cameron implying Quaritch's soul ended up in his clone so I don't think the original Jake is dead, the Na'vi believing in a fake afterlife is depressing enough already

>Na'vi believing in a fake afterlife is depressing enough already
Really makes Eywa seem much less like a benevolent plant goddess and more like a worldwide fungal parasite.

this is the 105iq take
James Cameron's 200iq take is that we are more than just a literal continuation of our consciousness. if you have a lasting influence on your society -- by passing down you're knowledge and expertise, for example -- you are not "dead" in the same way. note that all the people Eywa copies would obviously choose to be copied in that way even with full awareness that they aren't truly "surviving", so its consensual. Netyam (when alive) would want to stick around in CTRL-V form if it comforts his family, Jake wanted to avoid the vulnerability of his handicap and be fully with his Na'vi people etc.
its not something routine either, so it doesn't have the same flaw as the transporter plot hole.

I choose to believe it's not the same as Quartch being uploaded. Jake was projected into the body, not copy pasted. But uh, I see your point. If the original brain is dead and gone, what really is the difference? Also are we to believe the backup(quarchy upload) plan wasn't possible before way of water? Because if it was why not just do that from the start?

No, it's soul transfer. Otherwise Sigourney Weaver's transfer wouldn't have failed because she was too weak.

She could have just died before all the information could move across

Far less risk to have a pilot
