Every movie since TWBB he always talked about how badly he wants to do a car chase (not joking), and in interviews for One Battle he says hes had bits of this script for 15 years. Its Vineland, so it has the zany comedy and funny nazis and stoner stuff Pynchon does in all his books, but its also actually PTAs car chase script so its not a direct adaptation and everything in it is actually original PTA. So what IS the movie? Its PTA attempting and in some ways succeeding but mostly failing to *approximate* the humor, characters, and tone of a Thomas Pynchon book while shoving this approximation into this bounty hunter action movie hes been wanting to make. What this made is something weird, which has a lot of people in love with it (I suppose because movies are terrible and boring nowadays); but the problem is that to anyone paying attention it is clear this Pynchonian material does not actually work outside of his books and language. Instead of coming across like this weird, funny, paranoid world (that he mostly successfully captured in Inherent Vice), you have this stupid cartoonish kind-of satire that cant decide on a tone because its fighting between Pynchon and PTA the entire time.On top of all of this, it also seems like Trump’s election and the ongoing genocide of White countries has caused PTA to have a sort of existential crisis about the fact that he’s a racemixing traitor that now has black children who have torched his European lineage. Assuming the two father characters (Sean Penn and Leo) are supposed to be PTA’s mental stand-ins, the movie comes across as one giant copefest.
