Sony has the rights to produce spinoffs and sequels but the studio is only allowed to distribute those future projects in China. Netflix retains worldwide rights for every other territory. There’s no backend, and Netflix has no obligation to renegotiate on sequels.They essentially gave it all away for $20 million and whatever they can squeeze out of the sequels in China while Netflix gets worldwide rights including all the merch.They completely screwed themselves out of billions. Whoever oversaw that deal should be fired but it's Hollywood so they were probably promoted and made head of some other department.
