What went wrong
>>
because no one cares. it was cool when Jake was a human because then we the viewers could still relate to him, and explore the new world with him. now he has annoying little kids and they talk to whales and Eywa has a human face. it's not relatable anymore
>>
>>217335376
isn't that still profitable even on a 500 mil budget ?
>>
>>217335376
That's one billion more than superman, supergoyschizo. Stay mad, and I hope to see you shitting yourself later in the year when capeshit flops and ultimately dies
>>
>>217335376
The second movie unironically killed the hype, which sucks because this one was pretty good.
>>
>>217335376
Cameron has nothing left to tell.
>>
>>217335376
Honestly, not much fire and ash like we were expecting
The volcano scenes were cool and finally different from the jungles and water, but they were a few
>>
>>217335743
2 was pretty rough but it's impossible to enjoy 3 without it. tough situation
>>
>>217335743
they're both literally the same movie
>>

>>217335992
2 is great.
>>
>>217335531
Way of Water had about the same budget, and during its run Jim made statements suggesting that its break even point was more like $1.7 billion
>>
>>217335376

It felt like a really long movie despite the editing being already quick in some parts.

Best part was, ironically, Quaritch and Varang.

Still wanna see it succeed though. Cameron is one of the few true auteurs out there. I respect the vision, if nothing else.
>>
>>217335683
Why are Avatards so frail and sensitive?
>>
>>217335376
It rehashed the plot of Avatar 2. Cameron can only get away with hack writing for so long
>>
>>217336988
Stay mad, supergoyschizo
>>
>>217335376
Unironically less exploration and Pandora relaxation and way more aggressiveness and character action.
Ironic - Cameron gave TWoW critics what they want - darker and more action packed movie, and they have responded by watching it only once at best.
If it were another 1.5 hours of Sully enjoying time In a new biome with a bit of drama, it would have grossed 2 bilies again.
Never listen to retarded critics if you want to do great.

Time to put this shit to bed.

This. The first movie is a classic story well told. The two sequels are a bloated slog full of cringe and don't share the same sense of wonder and adventure as the first one.
>>
>>217335994
True. It's a clumsy way to do sequels, they feel like the same movie at times and have the exact same final battle. Pretty hard to care about a second time 3 years later.
>>
>>217337623
Dead wrong. Way of Water is just such a dull slog that absolutely no one cares anymore. The first movie was a phenomenon because of the novelty of the technology they used to make it, and enough people were willing to give a sequel a chance. But after that sequel proved to be a dull waste of time that shared none of the first film's spectacle and novelty, everyone except the cringe furfags checked out for good.
>>
>>217335376
diminishing returns. and the 4th one, if it gets made, will be even lower. people know that there’s no story to these movies, they’re video game spectacles with some fun characters to follow but nothing deeper beyond that.

also somehow the captcha keeps getting worse and worse by the day.
>>
>>217335743
2'd ending of a knife fight on a sinking boat was a pretty meh climax. Like... what? Alien planet, advance tech, and the two have at it like it's Dune or something?

Also Dune cutting the shields from their knfie fight was dumb.
>>
>>217335376
2 and 3 feel like entirely unrelated movies to the first one, and visually they look worse. I remember how in awe I was of the first movie. The 3D was incredible. I saw it in the theater three times because of that, it was so immersive. But Way of Water, and Fire and Ash, did not do the same. The 3D effects came nowhere close and the framerate makes it look cartoonish and bad in comparison. The quality of the effects feels lower somehow, despite over a decade of advancement. On top of that, the story doesn't have the same effective framing as the first did and just tries to be an exposition dump about lore minutiae that only James Cameron cares about rather than a wondrous adventure in an exotic world.
>>
>>217335376
Blame woke or nigger fatigue or girlboss fatigue or shitty theaters or ticket prices, but theaters are dying

>>217337714

>What went wrong
Way of water
>>
>>217335415
So many cool sci-fi ideas to explore and Cameron just wants to cry about whales and white people.
>>
>>217335376
There wasn't a 12 years gap this time
>>
>>217338536
No, but there was a 3 year gap which actually is worse considering that Fire and Ash is Way of Water part 2 in all but name. It was a clumsy way to do a sequel and is far too dependent on remembering the boring af second one to follow. Most people have checked out on this. The magic of the first one is long gone.

Avatar was unironically a victim of the circumstances of its time. The first one came out when people still had a soul to a degree. But 2 and 3? They came out at a time when people's attention spans, no matter their respective generation, are fried beyond salvation. They can't sit through a 3 hour movie, because they've become used to instant, shallow payoffs. And the zeitgeist has never suffered more from irony poisoning as now, sincerity takes a backseat to political shitflinging and a forced concealment of personal vulnerabilites that affect the human species as a whole, because social media has made all of us so much more exposed to having our character assassinated on the basis of ill defined reasons and arbitrary standards. The sneering at the space whales in particular struck me as a sign of the times, that people are unable to feel empathy for a fictional being so obviously and intentionally similar to its earthen inspiration, because to do otherwise would signal weakness, feeling sorry for a fictional being makes one look "silly" in the eyes of the faceless mob, the universal themes that permeate its struggle are ignored because on the surface it's something not entirely real, not entirely familiar, so jest rules supreme.
They're great movies for an ungrateful audience.

Yeah, people realized he's just going to keep making the same movie over and over again. Avatar 3 made it even more clear.

Nobody want to spend five hours wearing 3D glasses.
>>
>>217335376
Do I need to have watched the first two to enjoy this stupid fucking movie?
>>
Felt like a filler movie, only major thing happening was spider’s asspull. The finale is the exact same as 1 and 2. Quaritch and the RDA are holding the series back, the humans are boring and Quaritch has failed 3 times in a row. I’m sick of this bum
>>
>>217340225
Yes. This one in particular is not standalone from the second one, they might as well be called Way of Water Part 1 and Part 2 since it is really just a second half of that movie (James Cameron initially wrote and pitched it as one long 5-6 hour movie before the studio told him to break it up)
>>
>>217340278
Quaritch isn't even pretending to try and kill Jake Sully in this one, or even be a villain for that matter. They are practically best bros. Compare his characterization in 2 and 3 to the first one and they aren't even remotely the same guy who casually burned hometree to the ground while smugly sipping coffee.
>>
>>217335376
people are not on the mood of paying cinema to watch kinos before WW3
>>
>>217335376
People only went to see 2 because it was so long since 1, it's not that people (in a large capacity) were fiending for an avatar 2.

besides, we are so utterly used to CGI that it just isn't a selling point anymore. It shouldn't have surprised anyone 3 is doing not as great, 2 came out only 3 years ago

>>
>>217338458
Good. Good quality projectors are becoming very cheap. It's literally over for cinemas.
>>
>>217335376
The story is always weak but the movie looked and sounded amazing. Whenever I put those 3d glasses on I'm worried the film is going to be too dark but the movie looked great.
>>
>>217335376
Avatar 3 is only a slightly better version of Avatar 2. People don't have faith in Cameron to make anything original or new and surprising in this series anymore and so they don't care
>>
>>217335743
I loved 2s climax
>>
>>217343862
Then you're in for a treat since 3 has the exact same one.
