Can someone just give me some recommendations of the ACTUAL scariest movies of all time?

I haven't seen any actual horror movies (just corny campy shit) but whenever I google a list of the scariest horror movies, I get shit like jaws, the shining, or the exorcist. Sure those movies are good, sure maybe they were scary when you were 5, but they are not actually scary
>>
>>217341644
scary movies always will be better if you watch it in a theater, but nothing is really ever scary. closest thing I can think of is Jacob's Ladder or something
>>
>>217341754
True, only women are scared by fucking movies. Every time I watch something that has a reputation for being incredibly "scary" it falls flat with me.

I'm biased because Mulholland Drive is my favorite film of all time but it definitely has a few scenes that scared the fuck out of me on first watch. Deeply unnerving film
The Thing and Alien may be classics and part of the film critic horror canon now but those two are scary for sure.
Lake Mungo has gotten some criticism in the past few years as it's grown in popularity but it freaked me out on first watch. The Descent and REC aren't amazing films either but they too are quite scary.
>>
>>217342295
>The Thing

Cant help but laugh at the goofy puppets in this one

Same for Alien when the tiny alien scutlles away on the table, or when the obvious guy in a suit walks around
>>
>>217342350
Yeah they have some goofy parts but the isolation and the feeling of being trapped with no escape is what gets me. The big picture.
>>
>>217341644
Spoorloos is scary in a very mudane way, which increases the scariness for some people.
Cure has a scary atmosphere.
TCM is scary in a visceral, panicky way.
A bunch of weird, artistic stop motion movies are scary because of how uncanny they look. There's one called La Casa Lobo that seems fucked up.
Lynch movies have some scary scenes.
Body horror and exploitation aren't scary, just gross.
>>
>>217342382
yes apart from the dated effects at some places, the atmosphere is still amazing on both

A Somalian. They all look like this btw. Minnesota is fucking infested with these vile things and I really hope ICE gets every last one so my state and city become good again.
>>
In the genre of horror (with the possible exception of subgenres like body horror and psychological horror), video games surpassed movies a long time ago. Like, maybe 30 years ago. Same with action and adventure. I'm not even trolling. Alone in the Dark was scarier than any movie.
>>
>>217341644
scariest? maybe event horizon cuza the implications. that's one that really sits with you afterwards
>>
>>217343671
>Alone in the Dark was scarier than any movie.
I'm referring to the 1992 game btw, I've never seen the 2024 remake.
>>
>>217342476
>stop motion movies
I recommend Robert Morgan's stuff
>>
>>217343671
Well yeah, because you engage with it on a deeper level and get pulled in more, but videogame scares are all very samey to me and got old decades ago, while I still watch horror a lot.
Anyway OP you should try Noroi. It's pretty notorious.
If you want something more recent, maybe Bring Her Back. It's not like AAAAA HOLY FUCK TURN IT OFF scary but it has several scenes that will instill the feeling of horror in you properly, and it has some pretty fresh ideas so I think you might enjoy it even if you don't get scared even slightly.
Also this is not a recommendation, but the last movie I got properly scared by was The Tunnel. I don't think it's an extraordinarily well made movie, but somehow it worked for me.

>>217343650
What is Minnesota like these days? I visited my best friend there after his family moved in like 2004 and I was there for a week and had a good time and it was a beautiful state (was ther during school break) I wonder how bad it is now seems like every state is somehow worse today then when I was growing up.

Depends on what parts you go to, but genuinely Minneapolis and St. Paul have become total shitholes almost exclusively because of Somalians. They aren't safe places to be anymore. Crime and violence left and right. Shut down and abandoned businesses everywhere due to a mix of crime and our collapsing economy post-Covid. Other parts of the state are fine, mostly. Certainly the wilderness hasn't been hurt too much, other than some wildfires that have devastated some Northern parts of the state in the past two years. The suburban neighborhood I grew up in that used to be almost exclusively a white and peaceful area is now more than half Somalian and Arab. The left and the media keep trying to downplay or hide the damage done by the rampant illegals and foreigners that refuse to integrate and assimilate, as well as corrupt scum in our government like Governor Walz, but it's plain as day to anyone who grew up here how different and shittier it is nowadays.
>>
>>217341644
The ones that scared me the most are probably The Shining, The Blair Witch Project, and Paranormal Activity. Even these never really scared me much though. There are films like Straw Dogs that evoke strong, complicated emotions that kind of include horror, but I don't know if it counts as actual horror.

Because of the cold weather there I’m surprised so many people have relocated there from other countries tou would expect them to go to a state with warmer climate. If it narrows it down I flew there when I visited and I’m pretty sure whatever city I was in was like a half hour from the airport maybe an hour tops and it was driving distance to the mall of America. Seemed high trust with no backyard fences or any fences from what I can remember. I thought the houses I saw were very comfy. 2 story but with a basement fully furnished so from the back the house is 3 story. really cool.

I wonder at this point what states more or less still resemble their 90s or 2000s versions. I work in wildfire right now surprised to hear you guys have those up there but not that familiar with the geography.

Horror is a very personal and idiosyncratic thing.

The few things that got to me were pretty much entirely weird, low-budget crap that contained one or two strange images that reminded me of nightmares that I'd had and which popped back into my mind at 3am.

It's pretty much impossible to predict what will actually disturb someone, because it's just too idiosyncratic.

Talking to people, the things that they found really scary are usually things that they saw
- when they were very young
- when they were in a plane
- when they were alone and feeling sad in an unusually dark room during the winter.

Anon, have you ever seen Mary Tyler Moore? That’s what the twin cities used to be like. They just find the whitest place and dump a fuck ton of brown people on them. Look what happened to Canada, do you think jeets take naturally to -30° climate?
