Yeah, its pretty dull. But at least it had the ridiculous fishing pole kill in it.
A recurring thing I've noticed about classic noir films is that the ones centered around a detective tend to actually be some of the most overrated, while its all the others that tend to be good.

Tourneur brought the importance of the wordless moments (for Hollywood studio films that always need music/talk filling every moment.) Notably in Cat People, + Night of the Demons. These moments can be filled with dread, fear, tension, etc even outside of western shootouts.
