>"Tonight you have learned the final and greatest truth of the Ninja: that ultimate mastering comes not from the body, but from the mind. Together, there is nothing your four minds cannot accomplish. Help each other, draw upon one another, and always remember the power that binds you. The same is what brought me here tonight, that which I gladly return with my final words: I love you all, my sons."

The lighting and cinematography are actually really good in this. This and RoboCop use a technique called chiaroscuro, but because they're superhero films, people don't think of them as using astry techniques.

There's actually several shots that if you were to paint them and replace the turtles with human figures, they would look like Renaissance paintings.

This is one of the shots I was thinking of, and it's possible this may have been inspired by a real life painting.

The first film is done completely straight, aside from a couple of jokes and shot like a serious film. Visually the film is very dark, with lots of dark scenes. Compare it to the sequels, and those are shot like Power Rangers episodes.

Compare how the fist film is shot to something like this shot from Secret of the Ooze. where is all this latent lighting coming from? If this was the first film, there'd be a lot of shadows and darkness.

The original TMNT film is lightining in a bottle, and won't be replicated simply because the budget was so modest (it was the highest grossing independent film at the time) and it was made largely by outsiders to the Hollywood system.

I miss cinematography in films.

But if we don't shoot everything in flat lighting on a green screen, we can't "fix" it in post!

I fucking hate that mentality and the onward march of progress makes us lazier in our execution.
You name me or at least SHOW me one other capeshit villain with an entrance that exudes as much prowess and aura as this.
