Dunno about that but I do agree that Welles seems like one of those people who was just never afraid of anything or anyone.

The story about Hemingway is pretty typical. They meet somewhere (maybe in a projection room?) EH insults OW, grumbles about New York faggots or something, so OW starts camping it up to wind him up. They end up getting into a fist-fight but they're both quite old and out of condition so it's all a bit silly. Welles basically tells the story for laughs on some chat show, IIRC. Of course it might have gone down differently in real life but still you do get the impression OW was just unbullyable and unscareable.
