I felt his videos became more soulless and cringey after the movie's release. I could go to any video pre-movie like when he did a review of the board game Mr Bucket with Mike or where they goofed on the Inspector Gadget menu screen and still find it funny then he makes videos like hiking up the Rocky mountain and then pussying very cringely.

When James released The Dragon In My Dreams, I had just moved 400 miles away from my hometown to start University in a large city with my high-school sweetheart, and it had a really profound impact on me. His story about letting go of his childhood lined up so well with my own story that it was an example of profound cosmic synchronicity, and I will always cherish that video.

And even back then I thought his duck walk at the end was kinda awkward.

Screenwave got the memo from fans that the slobs weren't wanted. Justin went back to just handling business and Kieren (editor) quit. The recent videos have been a huge improvement and James has gone off autopilot and is actually trying again, Mike is helping out with the videos too. They'll never compare to the older videos but I'll still watch them. That period with the fatties was such shit though. Just a total miscalculation letting them have direct creative input.

I grew up with AVGN. I was 15 in 06', you watched this guy cause high quality content on YouTube at the time was super novel and being vulgar was funny. Like AVGN and other people on the internet (myself included) grew "attached" to creators, felt very passionate about them. Then as time goes on, things change, the content gets weaker, the rise of lolcow culture in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Fanboys start to evolve into detractors because things weren't how they used to be.
Hell people used to fucking hate Mike to death back in the day and now he's a beloved figure, hell CinemassacreTruth started because there was a theory that Mike kicked Bootsy out of the channel. Hell the 2011-2014 era of /tv/ threads about AVGN and TGWTG were always purely shitposting about these people.

Things change, people can be fickle.

I was cringing at myself a decade ago for ever liking Doug Walker, but this past year I have revisited his old stuff, just to have something comfy to watch before bed, and most of it actually hold up really well. Sure, there are occassions where Doug confuses loud and angry for funny, but he was genuinely witty in his prime.

Still baffles me that the AVGN movie was not a low-budget comedy film in the style of a Kevin Smith movie like Clerks or even his own series like Board James. He already had the premise of the Nerd working at a retro game store and side-characters like Mike, Bootsy, Guitar Man, etc. Throw in some absurdist horror/sci-fi stuff with the plot and it would be a perfectly acceptable movie that is in-line with the show. But no. We didn't get that at all

I somehow didn't know about this until recently and it blows my mind because AVGN is something I pretty much "grew out of" at like 14 or 15 years old. I still go back and watch his old stuff once in awhile but I can't imagine seething over this guy's every action because he made some entertaining videos 15-20 years ago and then went on cruise control.
