What is this show's obsession with mutant men?
>>
What other plausible explanation is there for monsters within budget?

It's a 90s thing. It was cheaper and easier to slap some prosthetics on a dude than CGI in monsters.
Charmed, Buffy etc all did this.

Haha, wouldn't it be so weird to be a young mutant man who gets captured by the FBI. Haha, and Scully has to perform special tests on you, haha

It's amusing how it never delves into cosmic horror stuff. Most of the monsters of the week are either basic mutants, or religious anomalies with devils and such.

Its easy and cheap to film.

One of the things that makes the show effectively creepy is that its monsters blend into normal society.

the whole point was the plausibility from a scientific perspective.

Cosmic horror doesn't leave Scully with much ground to stand on. With mutants, the writers can go "Oh, Chernobyl radiation caused this", "Oh, he's just massive sentient tumor", or "This is what happens after too much Inbreeding".

Which is why, as good as Vince Gilligan's episodes normally are, I'm not a fan of the episode with the genie or the guy that can reshape reality. Too fantastical.

Religion episodes somehow get a pass from me, because they tend to leave things ambiguous enough.

But how do the X Games and X-treme Butter popcorn figure into this?
