And this was My dinner with André™. The End.

But who really won the argument? Also no joke, I once converted this movie to an mp3 to help me sleep when I was battling insomnia.

What they actually say is not the point. Its more about the tone, the mood, the energy. Here are two friends urging the other to wake up and smell the coffee.
>>

YEP it's about a pretentious faggot called andre and a pretentious neet named bald guy trying to decide which of them is more enlightened - one is full of himself and the other is empty, the viewer decides which character is literally them
>>
i think it's actually rude to be like wallace shawn and "interview" people. it's like how about you tell a story sometimes? andre can't even eat his fucking food because he's being pressured to yap and yap as wallace sips his FUCKING SOUP. i don't want a grown man to sip soup while never breaking eye contact with me. i feel that it's threatening.

>Why won't you go on awesome adventures and journeys into enlightenment like I did?
>Because I want to stay in my '80s New York apartment with my girlfriend and my coffee.

talking about himself is andre's nourishment, thats why its so kino. perfect symbiosis as they figure themselves out.

Both had correct points, but Andre had no viable solution. You can't live outside of society unless you're independently wealthy and very lucky, and people with obligations to family/friends/others can't just leave to go to Poland for a year and be buried alive to self-actualize.

Wally's point of view about taking small pleasures where you can find them is the more realistic outlook. Both were right that society is circling the toilet. It's funny that back then Wally felt like a loser because he was 'just' a professor of Latin at a university.

Andre was an important film at the time (all the critics, the art types, and the New York lovers; loved the film); but I prefer Wallace Shawn in Star Trek Deep Space 9

it is rude and immature, he's a flawed character
>>

That's not a solution, it's just the other side of the coin. Andre is aware that people can't resist technology or comfort, he's searching for an artistic expression of the modern life and finding it difficult. Wally is seemingly just ignoring his point but it could be his own take as a playwright, that he has no choice but to live and make art in the world he's given.

Some people are talkers and some people are listeners. I am ok with that.

Wally is portrayed as being unworldly, the end.

He was a playwright like in real life. Supposedly they were playing each other THOUGH.

"Back then" has nothing to do with it, the point was that he aspired to artistic notoriety with his stage work that he seemed increasingly likely to achieve. I agree with your broader points though. I also believe that Wally's viewpoint about finding the joys of common existence more sympathetic, and I believe that's ultimately the message of the film. I think this is proven by Wally's decision to finally order an amaretto towards the end--to "live a little", as it were

Andre was an effette new age hippie he was only ever gonna yap

>increasingly likely
I meant increasingly UN-likely, oops
