How much of the casual racism and homophobia played a role in the show’s popularity? Let’s be honest without those two factors, The Sopranos isn’t that good.

In answer to your first question, I’d say no more than the unusually violent and expletive-ridden parts of the show did. Though the modern lens, things like racism and homophobia are often written off as bad, unnecessary, exploitative, and included only for shock value unless they’re exhibited by characters who unequivocally portrayed as evil but, in the show. They’re often used to highlight the hypocrisy of the characters.
