French films don't explain what is happening and characters motivations you are supposed to figure it out yourself. She hated her family life but lost them all by chance, she wanted a place to go and a meaning for life, to avenge her brother and to grow up quickly. Leon just wanted to do his job but has a soft spot for kids, he can't have any and never kills any. Movie easily explained for morons.
