George created a vague outline of the events and sprinkled enough lore in the form of worldbuilding, political intrigue and footnote characters for anyone with half a brain to stitch together a competent story. The problem with Ryan was that he either does not understand the source material at all and managed to bullshit his way into the role, or he never planned on making a faithful adaptation in the first place. I've personally gone over this since before the show aired on /tv/. It's not hard to write a good outline if you try to emulate the writing in ASOIAF. If you intend to match the books, you game plan for a large seemingly continuous series of events to appear on screen and have all the story and character arc complete, it's piss easy. 7 season, 1 pre war, 3 dance, 3 regency. No cast changing time skips. If game of thrones can tell a story without showing us the Greyjoy rebellion and Cersei popping every kid of her's, we can too for Rhaenyra giving birth and all the other silliness. Make it multi POV and Westeros spanning at the bare minimum, I'd personally add at least one Essos POV for each season. Sew things together, use the footnote characters and give them life. If we had spent seasons 1-2 getting to know Owen Costayne, giving him an understandable motivation like being madly in love with Samantha Tarly and made it out like a cliché knight saves the girl story initially, we could actually subvert the expectations of the audience in a way George would do. The audience would cry, the battle of the Honeywine would be a bittersweet tragedy, both sides have people were rooting for and care about. You get all this without having to butcher the source material, all you have to do is fill in the gaps. It's so fucking easy. This is what makes it so depressing when they choose to instead have Rhaenyra and Alicent incompetently girlboss their way around the Crownlands and love eachother more than their children.
