I love Marilyn but wish her movies weren’t all slop. I think she was actually a pretty good actor but I don’t think the movie people took her seriously.
>>217360941Some Like It Hot is one of the best comedies of all time
If this is slop, then call me a pig.
>>217360941While this is a product of its time, it’s pretty good noir. I wouldn’t call it slop.
>>217361062The final song and dance number with the pink dress is actual ludokino, I just skip to it
>>217361062goonslop
Some Like It Hot is a great film from one of the greatest Hollywood directors of all time.
>>217360941I always wondered why movies from between the mid 40s to the late 60s is such a massive cultural black hole these daysthen I watched a bunch of them and figured out why>big budget musicals that are saccharine and cloying and thus feel fairly disposable>low budget boring dreck that's not meant to be watched but as background noise while you make out with a chick at the drive-inthe 70s are mostly the same but from a different direction>50% of the output is low budget dramas with a downer nihilistic tone and they're not fun to watch if you're a functioning adult with grown-up responsibilities>45% of the output is low budget comedies and family films that feel disposable due to the low budget>the remaining 5% are movies that actually had money thrown at them and those are the only ones remembered
>>217361097Yes I goon to Marilyn; no I won’t apologize.
>>217361222The main problem was the Hays code put them in a straitjacket. Even Hitchcock films always have to end with the bad guy, clearly indicated as bad, receiving his comeuppance, explained in great detail by a cop.
>>217361254>t. my grandpa in 1953
>>217361062People dismiss this as a fluffy musical but it's got some really interesting things to say about relationships and gender roles. Also Marilyn is fantastic and all that dumb blonde business is an act. >>217361079Agreed. Not the best noir but still worth watching. >>217361126Absolutely. How SLIH lost best screenplay to Pillow Talk of all films is beyond me.
>>217360941Yeah, I was surprised too when I saw the cheap filmography of someone who left a huge mark on popular culture. As other anons have said, Some Like It Hot is the highest-rated movie she starred in.Although I wouldn't consider Gentlemen Prefer Blondes slop, it has great costumes, songs, and dialogue; even the book it's based on is a candidate for The Great American Novel. There's also the Asphalt Jungle, but she's not a very important character in it.
>>217361222Two words: Hays codeThat said, although some of these films lack depth by our standards, depending on your tastes they can be very comfy
what was once shlock is now highfalutin, purely because of how sophisticated and clever even bottom-of-the-barrel dialogue was back in the day. The costumes and scenery were also first class in these b-movies without even trying, the world was just pretty back then.A big thing that strikes you about pre-deluge films is how empty the world is. Even in a big city, as long as it's not Manhattan, the public parks and beaches have a mere smattering of couples and baby strollers. And a small town would be deserted, just a gas station and a general store. You could breathe!
>>217362254Also this movie, Pajama Party, stars Buster Keaton as an Indian Chief in one of his final roles, two years before he passed away, and he didn't even make it on to the DVD cover! The nerve of these pricks!Nothing in the plot calls for him to be an Indian Chief, he's just doing his usual slapstick, which makes it even better.
>>217360941this movie is one of the best American films of all time, full stop. It's also the movie that killed her.
>>217362372I think his final role was in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum? I've only seen it once many years ago but remember it as worth watching. >>217362026>There's also the Asphalt Jungle, but she's not a very important character in it.There's also her single scene in All About Eve, where as a newbie she holds her own quite nicely against very established stars.
>>217362826Yeah he's incredible in A Funny Thing Happened, nearly on his deathbed and still pulling death-defying stunts. He barely avoids getting trampled by a horse at the end.
>>217361062Pig
>>217360941Will we ever get an actress like her again? Just a likable, cute white girl with an amazing rack?
>>217363079The best they can do is Sweeney
>>217362826I think deep down, Marilyn wanted her own All About Eve; the fact that she was mostly cast in romantic comedies frustrated her greatly. Even so, when her husband did her a favor by giving her a starring role in The Misfits, she was still disappointed (I don't know the details of that story, so I don't know if she was being overly dramatic, if she was taken advantage of, or both).
>>217361062how did guys in the '50s not straight crank their shit raw in the theater looking at such delicious cheesecake?
