Why can't Jap films attain the cultural relevance of Korean films anymore? What are they doing wrong that they can't have big hits like No Other Choice or whatever?
>>217361788I really don't know. Not that many Korean movies get cultural relevance either. Seems like Parasite blew up and now maybe a couple of korean films make it mainstream. Besides the ones from Park and Bong, I can't think of any that are relevant.
>>217361788Korea is much more soulless and corporate and able to appeal to basest slop desires
>>217361788You're using a movie from the tail end of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's career, to complain it's not KPop Demon? DemonSlayer literally dominates east asian markets except nezha 2's single-country appeal. >>217363213Bong praised Drive My Car. It's a far more literary script than anything Korea could produce, even Lee Chang-dong isn't as precise + detailed & relies on the woo-woo to make Haruki Murakami exotic.
>>217361788Chud?
>>217361788Godzilla minus 1's boxoffice: US>Japan. Parasite's: SKorea>US>Japan
>>217361788Japan destroyed its culture and economy to become a theme park for white people
>>217363255This.Korea's entertainment apparatus has been based on aping Japan's. Unlike Japanese art and media, Korea's has no soul, but the Koreans have thrown everything into style over substance and modern audiences are just superficial enough to be taken in by it.We saw this in music. J-pop produced loads of really good music. It may be pop music, and it may be made with financial considerations in mind, but the Japanese music scene has always been artful. Korea took the j-pop formula and tweaked it: they made their groups more risque, they dumbed down the music and focused on the visual aesthetic to capitalize on the priorities of dumb westerners. What results is not music, really, but a soulless product to be peddled abroad to increase South Korea's soft power.
>>217363342Drive my Car was the last recent Japanese movie I watched. It was great but was only big in communities that actually watch movies, if you get what I mean. It never had mass appeal like Korean films. I think another part of it could be that anime is such a big export now that their film industry is dying. Pure speculation though. I can't think of any other recent popular Japanese movies, maybe because I'm actually a total pleb or maybe they're not out there. I'm thinking the former, I've fallen off.>>217363579You're so right about the differences in music. Korea could never produce anything like Shibuya-kei. Japanese shoegaze fucking rules while it's nonexistent in Korea. I could go on forever. But Korean movies are damn good, even if they lean on capitalist angst.
>>217363342Lee Chang Dong is far better than Hamaguchi, comparing them feels like a joke.
>>217363529>mfw this is realWhat the fuck
>>217361788I liked Cloud. It wasn't revolutionary and it's nowhere near as good as Cure, but it was good. You're are (wilfuly) confusing cultural relevance and mainstream appeal/success. But I think the main difference lies in the budgets, I can't remember a recent ultra-expensive, appeal to every man, woman and child movie from Japan...But its not like Japan is hurting for soft-power, anime and manga are (unfortunately) as big as they've ever been out side of Japan and the handfull of Chink/Korean stuff crossing over is barely significant.
>>217361788None of them reached the success of Parasite, No Other Choice didn't come close. And aside from these and Decision To Leave, I can't think of any other great korean film released in the past 5 years.
Unironically the Behind-the-Scenes live action Naruto movie AIsIop looks more interesting than anything the west has put out in the past 15 years , maybe more
>>217363792>Japanese shoegazeFor me, it's dip
>>217363792Japanese shogeaze and Shibuya-kei. This anon knows>>217364151BASED
>>217364090In the past 20 years or so Korean film industry is essentially been held up by the same two or three directors and these guys are getting older. They're gonna have to find new talents.
>>217363792The Box Man.
>>217364151have you seen 9 souls? Amazing film and a great soundtrack from dip
>>217361788Uh, Chainsaw Man is the most acclaimed movie of the year?
>>217363913GDP is fake and gay
I've been watching some of the critically-acclaimed Korean films that people recommend, and I'm just not seeing what all the fuss is about.Parasite, Memories of Murder, etc. They're good films, but the reviewers soaking their jeans over them are certainly only doing it because they're Korean and thus exotic.
>>217364250
>>217364200Nah, they have plenty of stuff from the 00s that got popular with film enthusiasts from directors that never really achieved greatness or fell off. Feel like it's really barren these days and it's really help up by a handful of guys that release a movie every couple of years.
>>217364277You're just acting like a rebellious teenager getting caught up in hype. They're great movies, what more do you want? Just enjoy yourself instead of trying to be a lame cynic.
Because they gave up or do nothing but adapt live action anime.I don't think Japan actually cares though.
>>217361788Every single thing from korea is artificial as fuck, bunch of soulless bugs
>>217364215Yeah sure, great stuff.Pornostar also directed by Toyoda used music from them too
>>217364151>>217364182You guys should listen to Luminous Orange
>>217364530not a fan, but this brings me 15-20 years back when I used to listen to every indie- flavoured japanese band I could get my hands on... Still listen to some of that stuff like tmge, Yura yura teikoku, Rosso etc
>>217361788Cloud was good tho, the fuck's your problem?
Japanese cannot act. That's why most japanophiles here watch anime or just jav. They don't even think jap tv is good.
>>217364710Rosso is one of my favorite bands ever. Mega based. TMGE and YYT are excellent, tooThere really is no Korean version of bands like these come to think of it
>>217364789There's unironically better acting in some jav than in Hollywood.
>>217364795Cool, and agreed on Korean bands
>>217361788Critics don't know Japanese films exist unless they are directed by Kore-eda.
>>217364789I think the thing is that in Japan any idoru can get cast in studio movies, sometimes in lead roles. But there are loads of great actors down there
>>217361788Japan makes americans insecure.
>>217361788>cultural relevance of Korean filmsWhat is said cultural relevance? They've been doing the same shtick of hecking edgy violence and sex since oldboy.
Korea found a groove (aka formula) with thrillers and have been running that shit into the ground for 20 years. If you've seen one you've seem them all.
>>217361788This any good?
>>217364530mother pearl might just have the best drum solo in any shoegaze album ever
>>217361788To be fair, even if they do suck at the moment, the Japanese will most likely forever mog the Koreans when it comes to movies based solely on the output of Mizoguchi, Ozu and Kurosawa.
