I hated it too. It's a movie exploring the irish identity through multiple people covering different facets of it.
Gleeson's character thinks he's high brow and too good for the "stupid" yokels, which are portrayed in Colin's character specifically.
He wants to be above it all, but even then he's literally doing the same shit he's been doing before, living the same life, having the same "identity" except more existentially isolated, which again is a take on irish identity as a whole.
Either you're some dummy that only cares about beer and village routines, or you're "high brow" and reach a bit higher but all you really are is a village dude that drinks beer but also plays the violin maybe and takes walks. Same shit really.
Plus other local characters also represent different takes on typical irish stereotypes.
