It's a greek tragedy sort of story. Marty is fated to be a fuckup because of his innate personal defects, but he still destroys his rival in that match, allowing him to achieve a personal victory even though it is ultimately meaningless.

He gets BTFO and then his lies come back to haunt him. He eventually has to eat his pride by letting Mr Wonderful spank him. He goes and wins, but not in a meaningful way, only him alone knows that he's the world's greatest ping pong player. But when he goes back to his Jewish mom and Jewish wife (both of whom drag him down) he knows that he's the greatest ping pong player. And that's all that matters for him.
