walt is an incredible liar when it comes to people besides his family, he is at his most human around them, thats why he panics when they're in danger. i mean even a hardened sociopath like gus cried when his partner died. thats also why gus and jack ultimately died, because walt took that familial instinct and used his smarts when he was clear of mind. breaking bad is as much a kind of nietzchian/jungian journey about man trying to achieve a sense of fulfillment and individuality.
