Not saying Joel "took it" or anything, but a Turkey Television upload on youtube from 1983 has a "MST3K" sketch, but no silhouettes, robots;et al. It is entirely possible that Joel saw it and it entered his subconscious. He might have seen it and forgotten, then expanded. Maybe.
