A bully Wes Craven remembers from when he was a kid as well as a homeless man. But then there were anti-inspirations. Things that happened that discouraged aspects of the character. When kids got molested or something like that, the studio decided to drop the bits about Freddy being a sexual predator for the purpose of good taste.Yet there still are the hints of pedophilia. Newspaper clippings in some of the movies. An obviously sexualized scene like the glove between Nancy's leg or his tongue licking her through the phone, or saying "I'm your boyfriend now!" A line like, "Freddy loved kids, especially little girls," can only be taken so many ways with everything else.

The camp is what made them popular in the first place, and kept the sequels coming for decades.Most of them just go super heavy on the gore and torture porn because the villain and his abilities are already well known by the audience. There's nowhere to actually go with the story.
