Originally it was about scientists doing experiments on a psychic girl accidentally punching a hole into another dimension and a monster phasing into our world and abducting teenagers, with the teenagers who find the pyschic girl after she escapes intrepreting it through analogies to D&D.
By the final season it turned out that the other dimension was so hellish because the psychic girl had banished another psychic there and he corrupted it, and the teenagers all defeat him with the power of friendship.
