That's something they added in the movies. Just like the overheating sword in the Two Towers. And of course the telekinesis. Jackson couldn't help but transform the wizards into fucking Jedis. Magic is much more subtle in the books.

He probably can do some impressive spells but seems reluctant to do so. It isn't something he does unless he is in mortal peril.
