Godfathers 1 and 2 are still masterpeices but Michael Corleone is remembered for being ruthless heartless and unrelenting. I share your dissappintment tho.

I like the comparison between Vito and Michael in 2. Vito kills Don Fanucci and Don Ciccio himself, with his own hands, well shoots Fanucci but you know what I mean, and it shows him building the Corleone family, the immediate family not just the criminal empire.
Whereas Michael is only shown waiting in rooms for other people to kill his targets (obviously he does get his hands dirty in 1) but it also shows him losing his family throughout the film.
