His character was sick of the gambling life but it's the only thing that made him feel alive. So yeah, there's an imbalance in his narration. That's why the last speech was spoken with such resolve. He finally believed in himself.

Kino enough that it was a big part in inspiring the online poker boom in the early 2000's.

Billions of dollars and hordes of unwashed young men in front of their PC trying to make it into a career. The only people who benefitted from it were the poker sites and the already established pros who could sell you an image.
