I can't think of any way to tie the story up in a coherent and satisfying way that gives the story some sense of purpose. The timeskip would have helped him a lot because it allows for a wide range of soft-retcons but he didn't do that and now he's left with a logistic nightmare.

Really, the story should have been limited to Westeros. With the looming threats to the north and east left more of a mystery. It would have been insane if several books in, the rumours of dragons and whitewalkers actually eventuate but instead of surprise, we get the dullest chore of a parallel political drama that fucking sucks in comparison to the depth of the "main" story.

It takes up so much time and could have been a much better told story through whispers and spy reports at court where the fans would speculate which reports were true or politicking.

I always thought feast and dance weren't that bad of reads as everyone else but it's become clear to me how much he fucked up with those books and I bet he wished he could go back and redo them. Or maybe the problem started even earlier.

The issue is that he never kept his stories tight. He just keeps adding plot points and characters that spiral out even further. There's so many fucking threads of things going that I can understand why he's overwhelmed trying to tie it together. Not to mention, his writing style doesn't seem to have a strength in conclusions as much as he writes an entertaining mysterious world. It feels like he didn't understand this weakness and problem during the process of creating this story.
