The details are a little convoluted but it basically amounts to:> Friend 1 secretly had 3 times travel boxes (one for him, one for friend 2, and a third one that was set for before he ever told friend 2 about tome travel so if they screwed things up he could always go back and just stop himself from ever doing it in the first place.)> Friend 2 guessed he was doing this and used the secret tome travel box to go back to before Friend 1 told him about time travel so the box would be "in use" thus preventing him from ever erasing him knowing about time travel. He then set up his own secret time travel box (box 4) so he could go back just as far in case Friend 1 went nuclear on him about it.
