First of all, I can't connect with any of the characters, they're all dry, selfish and non enjoyable at all. The fact that 90% of the dialogue is based on sex is tiresome, the pacing is slow as fuck for the kind of show it is, and I just don't buy Don Draper as a character. They want you to empathize with him for having personal issues, but at the same time he acts like the fucking boss when he gets pissed with others, what a little bitch. I see what the series is going for, but The Sopranos already did it, and way better, so why would I bother in watching this?
You shouldn't bother. Go watch The Shield instead which is the only TV drama worth watching in your lifetime. End of story.
For a guy who sees no point in Mad Men you sure fret about it an awful lot
>>217397767I already did, thanks to this board. It felt like a really long movie and I liked it a lot, even if the last two seasons could've been swapped into one in my opinion.
I understand your qualms, fwiw the pilot is I think the weakest episode by far, as seems to be common with pretty much all prestige television (including, it has to be said, my favourites).I think if you're going in expecting The Best Television Show Of All Time you're going to be disappointed because, as much as I like it, it just is a tier below the top (much like The Shield, actually). If you give it time, patience and intelligence you'll discover a rewarding show with unusual subtlety, nuance and grace, more novelistic in approach, though sometimes glacial in pace. That's more than I can say for 90 percent of shows out there. Watch the first 3 episodes before completely giving up
>>217397758You've never been young and wanted the world ala Pete Campbell? Never been awkward chasing women like him? You've never thought about whether or not love is real, ala Don? Otherwise the show's not for you. For whatever it's worth, I rank Mad Men as a series maybe 1 inch below The Sopranos, which is another way to say I think Mad Men is absolutely worth watching. A lot of Sopranos coasts along with violence, and that's not as titillating to me anymore as just good writing and drama. For instance, I dropped my latest rewatch of The Sopranos after Matt's death because it was just sort of boring.

>>217397934PREVIOUSLY ON [The Shield]
>>217397934No offense but The Shield's pilot is considered to be one of the best in television history, while I don't see anybody bringing up Mad Men's into discussion. I'll do what that anon said and will watch the first season, because I like the vibe and the cinematography, but hope it goes beyond the superficial aspects at some point.
