It pretty much always makes a movie more realistic. Sex is a part of life, it's something everyone on the planet can relate to. Kind of like other experiences everyone has had, like your first kiss, going to prom, scoring a touchdown, going to parties, marrying the love of your life, buying a house, having a kid and cracking a beer open with your friend. You wouldn't complain about one of these incredibly common experiences being depicted in a film, so why sex? It's a part of life, and if you take it away from life it's not even worth having.

Call me a zoomer if you want but I've always felt that sex and places of worship are two things that shouldn't really be filmed in fiction. Sure we can learn a little about the characters but we can learn the same things in different ways. They are very private, intimate experiences and putting them in your movie just to make fun of them or sensationalize them is incredibly disrespectful to every human on earth. Obviously there are exceptions, Wake Up Dead Man used the church in a very fascinating way, the sex scenes in Gone Girl are integral to the plot and Banshees of Inisherin/A Hidden Life use religious beliefs to move their story forward without being cynical. But more often than not it's just a way to pad time or to tell us something as stupidly as possible because the writer's aren't any good.
