When did the Simpsons go to shit?
>>
>>217405369
The Simpsons was never funny, its fans are just blinded by nostalgia goggles.

Well looking at your image, which takes its data from popular consensus, the popular consensus seems to indicate that the show worsened around season 11 and 12. What a useful and interesting thread!

>bart, a 10 year old child sneaks out of the house at 3am, somehow, this ten year old child has the fucking ability to use a hacksaw to saw through a fucking statue

sure

The decline was visible by season 6. The show was on life support by season 8. It was dead-dead by season 10.

Seasons 1-5 were peak.

When Oakley and Weinstein left and it increasingly became about celebrity guest appearances, Jerkass Homer plotlines and Mary Sue Lisa plotlines, the writers and directors increasingly left for their own shows and you can't just replace guys like Conan O'Brien, Greg Daniels and David X Cohen with equally talented people.
Basically Mike Scully shepherds the decline into mediocrity and Al Jean as Solo Showrunner just day-to-days and increasingly boring and methodical show into oblivion.

s1-3 as a whole are fantastic and you're soulless or mentally impaired if you actually watched them and think otherwise

>>
>>217405415
This. I defy you to find one fan that was growing up while it was at it's peak. It's all just nostalgia that they refuse to let go of. The rest of us were sitting there looking at the pawing over their hack jokes and retarded animation.
>>
>>217407920
It’s sappy bullshit. Every episode ends with a “heartwarming” moral and Lisa playing her saxophone. It’s basically Full House but animated and with yellow people.
Bleh.

The show is in its 37th season and the last time they got a score above 8.5 was in 2001. Pre 9/11. How the fuck are they getting away with it?
>>
>>217405369
The exact moment the show irreversibly went to shit is the episode where Homer was raped and it was played for comedy.
https://simpsons.fandom.com/wiki/The_Strong_Arms_of_the_Ma
This is some proper "death of childhood innocence" shit right here.
>>
>>217408180
>How the fuck are they getting away with it?
Good viewership ratings. Simpsons still gets ~5 million viewers per new episode.
South Park for example on the other hand struggles to crack a million with their new stuff.
>>
>>217405369
Whenever you turned 17.
The Simpsons is for kids aging out of childrens cartoons but still not into live action television.
>>
>>217405369
As usual in these kinds of situations, it went to shit once the first guard left, Season 10 is the cutoff point when they started relying more and more on celebrity cameos, wacky plotlines and went full digital with the animation.
>>
>>217408886
What I meant by First Guard was Matt Groening (who left to do Futurama and was only there as an advisor), James Brooks and Sam Simon.
>>
>>217405369
It was never good, but had some good episodes. I watched it religiously through the 90s until ~2005. Going back and watching it, it's just very average at best. It doesn't beat a lot of cartoons peak-for-peak.

8 is the last great season, 12 is the last season with a handful of watchable episodes.
>>
>>217405369
I've watched all episodes up to season 8 and think it is still solid, very solid in fact, so I disagree with the season 6 decline claims. If you average the scores it seems like season 16 and 18 are the last two seasons to hit 6.9 as a whole. I'd say that's when the show actually starts to dip to hell and it isn't even alright, but bad.

And that is actually when I dropped the Simpsons. Back then I was still watching the weekly releases and stopped. I think specifically season 17.
>>
>>217405369
Sometime around season 7 the quality fell off a cliff.
It should have been cancelled outright when Phil Hartman was murdered.
>>
>>217410004
Even as early as S5 there already are some bad episodes for me.
>>
>>217405369

Who do you genuinely think you're fooling making posts like this? You have 0 concept of cable television or that things were once novel
>yes well if I pretend to be 50 years old actually I analyzed it against everything that existed and I always knew it was bad
you're literally underage b&. People who are 50 years old worship star wars and the simpsons

South America is in a timewarp. They still play Sega Genesis and watch the Simpsons and read the Bible.

Marital rape doesn't exist
>>
>>217410809
The first two seasons have a sweetness to them that later seasons lack, heartwarming and the Simpsons act like real people. Starting in Season 3 it became wackier and more about jokes-per-minute
>>
>>217405369
If homer drops the N bomb hard R it would be 10/10 again
>>
If you can pinpoint the exact moment of decline, I'd say the S9 episode The Principal and the Pauper. They completely rewrite Skinner's backstory only to disregard all of it at the end of the episode. So fucking shitty.

>I defy you to find one fan that was growing up while it was at it's peak.
Everyone in the 90s watched and talked about The Simpsons, but no one called themselves "a fan". Back then things were much simpler. You watched a show but you didn't have to be part of am obsessed "fan" community. In fact, this show and the rest of 90s media mocked contemporary fan communities as being a bunch of nerds and freaks.
The world changed drastically since then. Now everyone is "a fan" and relentlessly defends their preferred corporate product online. They spend more time reading posts and watching videos about a TV show than watching the show itself. It simply wasn't like that back then. If you weren't a zoomer you'd know this
>>
>>217411241
Some will defend this episode saying that it's actually mocking tv shows that change a character's backstory as a cheap ratings ploy, which is true, but the problem is that it's not funny, so instead of coming off as a spoof of those shitty tv episodes it simply is one of those shitty tv episodes
It also happens to be right after the episode Homer vs the City of New York which is the last great episode of the series
>>
The simpsons decline roughly corresponds with 9/11. there are very few simpsons episodes made after 9/11/01 worth watching. It is not a coincidence.
>>
>>217411345
There were few good ones in 2000/2001
>>
>>217405369

let me guess, the 5.0 episode in season 9 is the Armin Tamzarian one?
