They took real live cartridges, removed the gunpowder, and reinserted the bullet tips to make them look normal. During that earlier use, one of these dummy rounds malfunctioned: the bullet tip became stuck in the barrel of the gun but this went unnoticed. The gun wasn't properly inspected, cleared, or cleaned afterward.When Massee fired the blank, the force from the exploding powder propelled the previously lodged dummy bullet tip out of the barrel with nearly the same velocity as a real bullet. The round hit Lee which caused severe internal bleeding which led to his death.Way more complex than Baldwin just being handed a gun that somehow had a live round in it
