I Love That Holly Hunter Can’t Sit in a Chair Normally on ‘Starfleet Academy’
>The first two episodes of Starfleet Academy do a lot to, almost to the point of an open defiance of academic authority as a stand-in for expectations wrought from 60 years of Star Trek, tell you that this is a show with a very different vibe from what’s come before. Its young adult heroes are a heady mix of hormonal emotions and sullen distrust of their elders that, in equal parts, feel like accurately charming representations of a bunch of kids who’ve grown up in a wildly shaken universe and also like the show itself almost baiting long-time Star Trek fans into being annoyed that these damn youths aren’t behaving like people in Star Trek should behave.
>But it’s not one of the kids who actually pulls off the most charming move, or the move that’s probably bound to have some corners of Star Trek fandom gritting their teeth at perceived disrespects. Instead, it’s arguably the most seasoned member of the cast, Holly Hunter, and I am absolutely in the camp that the move is incredibly charming above anything else.

This is literally woman behavior. This is what women fucking black men to get back at dad do. This is purely female driven. There are no Star Trek fans watching this shit anymore. Not really. Everyone I know has made peace with the IP being dead. It's sustained entirely by this aforementioned feminine urge to "get back" at men by fucking yourself up.

The problem with NuTrek Captains is they never take their work seriously. They love
having power over an entire ship, but run from the responsibility that comes with the power. Even Janeway had to make difficult decisions like killing Tuvix. Kirk, Picard, and Sisko had to make decisions that affected entire planets. You can tell the writers never held any responsibility greater than making sure the cats were fed and plants were watered.

The trend started in Enterprise, but somewhere in the 2000s the owners of Star Trek forgot that everyone on-screen is meant to be a mature professional. People asked questions, got answers, and fell in line without so much as a snarky comment. Even Quark was professional in that, "owns a business" type way.

I don't know, maybe this is just how maturity is expressed today. Maybe I'm old-fashioned and "professional" really is, "have a struggle session before crying about your situationship."

Its either one of 3 things, or maybe a combination. They genuinely think it makes her look comfortable in the position as captain. Its a dig at men as the chair is obviously designed to accommodate ones size. Or they intentionally want her to seem lackadaisical to piss people off so they complain and they can claim they're being attacked. Either way, its all performative. Its like they don't even know we already had Janeway who got along fine without that crap. Its all completely unnecessary

I'm pretty confident in saying there is no way they'll have her pay for her idiocy at any point. She will never have a moment where she has to walk through broken glass. That would require some actual character development and growth. She'll be too busy standing on soap boxes giving speeches

It wouldn't be real Star Trek otherwise. MacFarlane did the same in The Orville and they're the best episodes.

The granny captain makes no sense. She has no real arc here its like solved in the first episode the moment she reunites with the kid and decides to help him. She needs a conflict of some kind like they should have made her a top tier captain until she separated the kid and mother then that guilt caused her to plunge into alcohol fueled depression that caused her to be a bad captain and almost get discharged from Starfleet. This gig at the academy should have been her last chance. This way as the kid grows and has success finding his mom she also slowly grows into being a great captain again. You tie their future stronger than it was in the show. For example in the 2nd episode with the peace conference, it should have been made clear if that failed, her career was over so she has to work with this kid she is tied to, to save both of them. I don't understand why the story isn't like this other than they didn't want to make a flawed female captain.

Women can't make mistake, chud. Get that though your thick incel skull.
It's a strange trend with modern writing where a main female character rarely have flaws, and if they do have flaws it stems from something outside of their control and was never their fault.

StarTrek Starfleet Academy is the perfect soft reset for Star Trek. Discovery marked the transition between the old, now outdated Star Trek (TOS-TNG-DS9-Voy) and the modern Star Trek that begins today with Academy.

They did an excellent job with the Burn in Discovery; the plot was perfect for destroying the old Federation, erasing old enmities, creating new ones, and forging new friendships.

Academy is perfect for rediscovering the species of the Federation, and starting with young people is obviously very symbolic.

My only personal issue is the importance given to romantic relationships, even though they were always present in Star Trek (whether in TNG, DS9, or Voyager), but I don't like the modern way of talking about them. I find it super cringe, but that's probably because I'm not a zoomer.
