Elvis WAS pretty effeminate for his day. But if you just played it straight modern audiences wouldn’t pick up on that. So they amped it up a bit for the movie.

His fancy pansy looks in the 50s (before side burns) was based on Elvis' IRL stuff. Quasi-French sailor adjacent lol. I do think Baz L punched it up with MORE PINK, LONGER eye lashes. And Butler to my eyes played up the "elvis was a kept boy of Colonel" angle which is pretty scandalous if you sell it to Elvis fans.
