Studios will VERY often just buy out the film rights and/or options for anything and everything that is popular, and then intentionally do fucking nothing with them. It's strategic asset denial. Paramont gives the kids something like 50-100K, and this ensures that no other studio will be able use that asset to create a billion dollar empire. Literally every studio does this all the time
